I am having some commitment issues with choosing a read a loud for a co-op class I am leading. The class will have 5 girls in 4th and 5th grade, and two boysnin 5th and 6th. I am hoping you all may have some thoughts to share.
We have 7 weeks, and I will have 15-20minutes a day for reading aloud. I am considering Freckles by Gene Stratton-Porter, or Frightful’s Mountain by Jen Craighead George. I am not confident that I can finish either in our timeframe, but I am hopeful to spark interest in the children.
I have also considered The Railway Children by Nesbitt. I am looking for something to keep the boys interested, without losing the girl’s interest. I am reading all three now trying to choose and I just can’t seem to decide.
What are your experiences with these books and/or these ages? I am also wondering if you think Frightful’s Mountain can be read independent from the first two books? So far it seems like it can, but I am also familiar with the first two, so I don’t know if that is affecting my judgement.
I haven’t any experience with Frightful’s Mountain, but it seems to me Freckles or the Railway Children would be great for girls or boys. I’m not sure how long it might take you to read, I don’t have them in front of me right now to see, but I would definitely love to read either of those to that age group and mix.
Thanks Sara for your input. In reading Freckles, I am not certain about the romance with the Angel. I am not sure if this would seem appropriate for the younger set. I am enjoying the Railway Children, it is shorter, so maybe could be finished in our time frame.
I am still intrigued by Frightful’s Mountain, it seems more suspenseful than the others. This might be better for building the anticipation from week to week.
I better make up my mind quickly, classes start ion Tuesday.
Blessings, Paula
