As there have been so many recently posted threads that relate to habits, character, and discipline, I thought I’d encourage the reading of Ourselves, by Charlotte Mason. It is broken into two books. You may read it yourself, but CM intended it for parents/teachers to read it to an audience of children. Book one is intended for children up to twelve years of age. Book to for those older than twelve.
You may find this undertaking challenging, but it will inspire you to instill good habits in your children. Quite frankly, it redirected me to improve my own habits in order to improve those habits they’ve unfortunately learned from me. These are the very same habits I don’t want to see in them, the habits that cause me to look for causes and cures. Guess what? If I’m the cause, I can also become the cure. ;0). So can any mother who is willing to implement change of habits.
Thanks for posting this. I’m about to finish vol 1 and was trying to figure out what volume to read next…this sounds like a good choice.
I also feel very convicted when reading some of her writings. I was just reading about how moms tend to let things slide because their child had been doing well in his habit and mom wants to give him a break. The child then learns it’s not a big deal to keep up with his new habit since mom let it slide. I am so guilty of this!
If you want a physical copy, I was able to purchase the set from Alibris. I pieced the books together from several sellers. I think it was less than $20, including shipping.
You probably wouldn’t get that new book smell though. 😉
I just picked up the whole set from our homeschool office for…. free, my favorite price. Haven’t started yet on Ourselves, Vol 4, because I’m still finishing up The China Study. Thanks again Becca for this recommendation.
