I have read the other posts but was hoping to narrow down my choices by giving more info on our situation. I need a World History course for one school year. We are currently using SCM’s history guides but for next year I will need to change that up and use something that is just for World History for my high school student. My ds is not an avid reader and will only occasionally use audio books but I could try those as well.
Any suggestions??
Thanks in advance.
ETA: World History: The Modern World, is actually what I’m looking for.
Have you considered only using the World History portions of modules 5 and 6? That would be a one year study by leaving out the American History portion of each. I’d think 1/2 year for module 5 WH lessons and 1/2 of module 6 WH lessons would make one year. You could go through the spine books, add occasional audiobooks, and documentaries. Going over speeches and timeline events would be very helpful, too. Just a few thoughts.
You might look at TQH Age of Revolution III. It might be a good list for a modern times events study. You could have him look up each topic and create a timeline. Adding some books, reading/discussing the TQH commentaries, adding documentaries, and an audiobook here and there would be quite good. It covers 1865-2000.
We love TruthQuest and Beautiful Feet!! My Father’s World was adequate, but a bit pricey. Their spine is the Notgrass World History. DD didn’t mind it. Notgrass also uses books/literature to accopany their study. I apprecieted their primary source book that goes along with the course. Based upon what you’ve described, I would recommend Notgrass Exploring World History. http://www.notgrass.com/notgrass/exploring-world-history/

greenebalts, Did you all do the Beautiful Feet high school Us and World History? If so, how did you like it? It is one of the other options I’ve been looking at for modern history.
Our dd is currently working through the BF US & World History. I have not personally done it. She works independently. I split this BF guide over the past two years, which is recommended by BF. There’s a lot there. Our dd really likes BF. She continually mentions the depth of the questions. To her, they are very thought provoking. She’s also used Sonlight and My Father’s World in the past, but BF continues to be her favorite. She is finishing up her 12th grade year and I’ve taken a bit of a backseat approach with her this year. She is thriving and loves her studies!! Basically, she reads the books and keeps a journal/notebook with notes and narrations, copywork and quotes that she selects from the reading. She utilitizes the guide questions as reference or starting points for her writing. She also keeps a separate notebook, where she maintains a timeline of people, places, and events.
I am currently working through the BF Early American History guides with our younger kids and we also really enjoy it. I like Rea Berg’s approach and the BF books are fabulous, very high quality literature!! IMHO
I have a few blog posts with high school history outlines and reading plans. I used BF as a supplement, however, this is totally not necessary. There is more than enough there to make it a stand alone program. I just happen to be a curriclum junkie with veracious reading kids 😉
Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thank you. Now I feel torn between the 3 or 4 mentioned. I have seen, or used, SCM/BF/TQ, but have not been able to see a sample of Notgrass. Anyone know where I can download a sample? I had a hard time with the BF’s World History sample, as well. The exact time period I’m looking for (and am willing to buy 2 programs for overlap) is the late 18th century to present time. It looks like I would need 2 TQ guides or 2 SCM guides or, I think, 1 Notgrass book (the second one and In Their Own Words), or 1 BF guide (but add something in at the beginning-it looks like it starts at 1800, but I’m not sure-I’ll have to look again. Is all of this right?
I guess I’m looking for something entirely independent, with writing prompts added, maybe even test questions or mapping/timeline. I would still ask for narrations, written and oral, but I’d be okay with my ds using some test questions, as well. Oh, and not too many books to choose from. I love TQ but I can’t weed through that many books right now, would like them chosen for us, then I can add if needed.
Thanks for all the guidance so far. I truly appreciate it.
