Do you ever find as your children grow up that their needs change? I have used the same curriculum for the last three years and I am finding that it isn’t working anymore for my children. My dd who is 12 really needs to be reading most everything on her own. My twin boys who are 8, are really at very different academic levels and need more of my time.

I really need to plan out a more CM style of learning as I can’t afford to buy new cirrculum. I do have the CM planner, but I must admit I am a little overwhelmed, especially after having eveerything planned out for me, aka teacher’s guides. I know I want to finish this school year with a term on middle ages and one on the renaissanece (I can’t spell this morning, ill children last night). DD hasn’t really had any american history, so for the next 2 years after, grades 7 and 8, I really want to cover american history.

I am not unfamilar with CM at all. I just need help planning. Does everyone use a spine and then have other books the children read to themselves. DH definately wants us to start copywork and studied dictation right away.  Is just having dd do written narrations enough or should I look for something more formal for writing?

Calagon take me away. Thank you for any advice.

Hi, we are new to this also.  I just quit the curriculum I bought and switched over to following the SCM guide completely. Click on her curriculum guide and see recommendations for every subject.  We are using Module 6 for History.  You could click on the one for Middle Ages. I found every book so far at the Library.  I got books for Poetry, Music and Art there also. We do not have a Spine per se, but just using Notebooking to combine it all together.  I really like the books by HA Guerber, you could probably use that as a spine or something similar. She has Middle Ages and Renaissance books.  If you already have the planner just write out your new schedule and plan to start the week after tomorrow, so you can collect all your library books.  Most libraries allow you to search onlilne and request books online, so you only have to run in and pick up your pile.  If your library doesn’t have the exact books you could always search for books on the same topic and get those instead.  There are tons of free grammar and math sites online that are free.  You could probably incorporate a little of what you already have too.  I had Easy Grammar, our math curriculums and Artistic Pursuits that I plan to keep.  Instead of using an expensive Bible Study Curriculum we are now just studying our bibles, which we already owned.

I also find this easier on me so much because I am now combining my kids for almost every subject.  They are 4th and K.  With a regular curriculum I would have 2 different everythings, but now they listen to the same books with the older adding in more after the K student starts drawing in his notebook.

I too am new to the CM method, but have to agree with mrsjamiesouth about the SCM curriculum guide. It is really great! I have been using mostly library books for history, art, science, literature, and poetry too! I have the Plan Your CM e-book and have found that if you will follow it and the curriculum guide on this website you will be pleased with the results.

As far as spines go, the curriculum guide uses these books for the spine in module 4 (which I think is what you are wanting to do):

Famous Men of the Middle Ages

Famous Men of the Renaissance and Reformation

You should definately look at the curriculum guide/history module 4 🙂

We also use Spelling Wisdom for dictation/spelling. It could be used for copywork too, but we use Bible verses that I choose for copywork right now.

I don’t know much about teaching writing formally, since my kids are still young (2nd and 3rd grades), and I am still learning about CM methods. However, there are some very wise women on this forum that I know will have some advice for you. I am counting on that wisdom too! 😉

    Hope I’ve helped a little bit 🙂

    Amanda
