I have been planning for next school year, as our South African term starts in January 2014.  Language Arts seems to be the one tripping me up.  I purchased the Hearing and Reading, Telling and Writing by SCM, which was helpful.

But, I need a plan or book, like something to use, otherwise I know that I just won’t do Dictation and other parts of Language Arts.  Previously, I’d hoped to do my own CM kind of LA lessons, but never actually got the time to plan them. It’ll be easier to have something to just open and do.

As finances are low, I was looking at older, free online books.  To my mind these are often of a better quality anyway.  I thought I would use, alongside our tradition of learning poems, narrating and reading many living books.

I have found two that I like.  For Dictation, the books by Kate van Wagenen and for Grammar, the Mc Fadden Language series.  I feel those two series fit the gentle CM style and are best for our situation.  My children are aged 7, 9 and 12, and I would slot them into different books.

I’d appreciate any thoughts about using these.  Has anyone tried them or looked at them?

    Thank you,

    Lindy

    Hello Lindy,

I looked both of the books you mentioned over and they look very good to me! I found them very consistent with Charlotte’s method.

Enjoy your summer weather! We had a pleasant 60 degree Saturday here in Oklahoma and took advantage of the sunshine to visit the zoo :-).

Thank you so much Heather for taking the time to look.  I appreciate that.

I’m glad that you got some warmer weather and an outing.

    Regards,

    Lindy

There are tons of great (free) ideas here:  http://www.bravewriter.com/bwl

Last year we used the free worksheets here (the corresponding book is free online as well): http://dontneednoeducation.blogspot.com/2010/01/grammar-land-worksheets.html

We’ve done best with a weekly schedule mapping out different areas for example:

    Monday–copywork

    Tuesday–dictation

    Wed–notebook page/writing assigment

    Thur–grammar & dictation

    Friday–copywork

*I tailor these for each child…my 6yo would be focusing only on phonics and copywork, while my 11yo would focus more on written narrations, grammar, and dictation.
