Do any of you cloth-diapering mamas have any suggestions for a cloth alternative for pull-ups for a child too big to wear a regular cloth diaper to bed? My ds 3.5 is daytime potty trained, but still needs to use a pull up at night. We used and loved BumGenius cloth diapers and found they worked great even for overnight, but he is too big for them now. We’ve just been using disposable pullups, but I’m looking into the possibility of switching back to cloth as we are getting ready to move back overseas next month. Any ideas or reccomendations?

    Thanks!

I’ve not found anything great for bed once they don’t fit BumGenius. My 6yo girl still wets the bed most nights (it runs in the family on daddy’s side and she’s the 3rd of my potty trained children to not stay dry at night out of 5 potty trained so far). We use disposables for her at bed. Stinks to spend the money, but she needs it, so we do.

You know, I used to sew and sell cloth diapers online.  A friend of mine who also made and sold cloth diapers tried to make a pull-up for older kids and I tested two of them for her.  We quickly discovered that older children seem to have a heavy pee sometime in the night and that seems to be why cloth pull-ups leak.  I had two of my children test them out for quite a period of time, but it was very frusterating because they were constantly waking up with wet sheets and pj’s.  It was such a bummer, but I don’t know of any fabric that will absorb those super pees.  If there was enough fabric to absorb those big pees, it would be just way too thick for the child.  Even microfibers that might soak up that much liquid just can’t absorb it that quickly.  We still have a bed wetter and just resorted to buying Goodnites for him.  It stinks to spend the money, but it’s much better than washing sheets everyday.  And the worst part is, I wasn’t even a bed wetter but all my kids have been.  Thankfully they do out grow it.

Yeah…. but then, they might not outgrow it until they are 15!  (at least… I assume she outgrew it…..)

Let’s hope it’s not until 15!  I’ve been diapering for 14.5 years now! lol

I used a couple on my daughter until she was about 4.  FuzzyBuns XL was recommended for her and it was definitely big enough, but I couldn’t figure out all the snaps:)  Right now I use an Alvababy pocket on my 2.5 yr old and it’s the largest pocket diaper I’ve seen so far, much bigger than BumGenius, it might fit a 3.5yr old.  I could try it on my almost 4 yr old if you would like.  I, however, have problems with pockets at night, my side sleepers leak.  My daughter was a very heavy wetter, and what worked was a Toddler prefold/snappi, with a few doublers, or an infant prefold trifolded into the Toddler prefold.  Then a Dappi nylon cover, or a Staccinator So Simple Cover.  She had to waddle to bed, and didn’t like it, but it worked:)

My only problem was I only had her in cloth at that time and there wasn’t enough diaper laundry to make a load of only diapers without waiting for 4 days, and by then the ammonia from those full night diapers was awful!

http://www.diaperswappers.com is a great place to get great used diapers sometimes very cheap.  Let me know if any of that didn’t make sense.   Adrienne

Heere is the link of a lady I met at a bookfair.  She had a booth and sold cloth diapers and accessories as a ministry.   She sells cloth diapers, training pants and even swim pants along with other things.  Maybe something on here will work.

Thanks for the ideas all. I asked on FB too and seems like there is no truly great solutions! Hmm…. I did do a little searching around the internet and discovered that there is a training pant available from the same folks that make the Bum Genius diapers. They said on their website they can work overnight if you stuff multiple inserts inside. They are new so I couldn’t find any reviews, but I was happy with the BumGenius inserts (we weren’t having leak issues when I gave them up, more problems with the shells being too small. These are supposedly good up to 50 lbs or a 4T size), so I’m thinking about giving these a try. Here’s the link if anyone else is interested in taking a look….http://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info.php?cPath=60&products_id=3110

Here are some mom’s reviews on the Flip trainer, and one said it’s going up in price after the new year:  http://www.diaperswappers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1326935&highlight=flip+trainer

I don’t know what your budget is like, but I would try something cheaper like fuzzibuns first to make sure you like them and that they work.  Hopefully you won’t be using them much longer.  The large Fuzzibunz is for 25-45+lbs, so the extra large would be fine.  Just to compare prices, there are 4 LX Fuzzbunz with inserts on diaperswappers that the mom said she used for nighttime for 45.00 including shipping, the Flip Potty Trainer is 24.95 for one diaper.   Look on your local craigslist too, there are great deals on there sometimes.

Nightime cloth diapering is hard, hope you find what you need!

I was actually going to suggest a flip diaper to you – I didn’t know they had new potty training ones… since you just need it for nighttime, I probably wouldn’t buy the pottytraining one because it’s just made so they can pull it up and down.  I have one FLIP diaper and I’m not crazy about it because it’s SO wide, but I bet if you used a toddler prefold with a snappi and a doubler inside that, you could use the flip cover and be good.  I’ll try it tonight with my three year old and see how it works (we’ve just been using disposables).
