I’d love to hear those favorite family readalouds where your kids begged you to read “just one more chapter”! You know, the books where each chapter leaves you in suspense, wanting to know what happens next, and aching for more. Any title suggestions?
I would like to bump this one up. I am looking for chapter books that my kids can enjoy just on their own reading time! I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions. We really like to go to the Library and they are really starting to enjoy quiet reading time!
Dr. Dolittle was a “begging for more ” on most chapters for us! (though we read aloud). Also, My Father’s Dragan series. Not sure of the ages of your kids though. My readers are 7 and 8. They also often could not put down the Little House series.
I see the original poster was asking for great read alouds, and Jennifer, you are looking for great can’t-put-down books for quiet time. I have an interesting theory here. I’m finding I want to hold onto the “can’t-put-down” books to use more as read-aloud, otherwise my kids are racing through, just SO eager to see what happens next! Of course, it’s great when they’ve found a book they love, but my fear (still slightly unfounded but I am beginning to monitor) is that they are so caught up in wanting to know “what next” that they are skipping over some of the descriptive writing in favour of plot.
I suppose I should be pleased though that they enjoy reading so much
The Chronicles of Narnia has been a favorite for years. Now that my childre are old enough to read it on their own they reread them over and over. We own the series plus various offshoot books. We also own the audio books, the BBC DVDs and we have watched the new movies out. We are crazy CS Lewis fans!
