Misty, one of our sons, who is way too young for any testing yet, but still, I think he will be one who will not go to a 4-year college. He has some learning challenges and well, he just has a keen interest already at a young age for the mechanics of things (cars, lawn mowers, gears, you name it!).

One thing DH and I have talked about is when he is in high school–if this is still his interest and possible goal for adult career–is an apprenticeship with a local mechanic. We know a couple of guys who own auto repair shops, and both have said they love having willing high school students to work with them a few hours a week. They said they often make wonderful employees.

I thought I would throw this out there as another possible idea. We are also fortunate that the Nashville Auto Diesel school is not too far from us, and apparently it is one of the best in the country as students travel here from all over the country.

We have also talked about an apprenticeship with a local mechanic.  The only thing I worry about is language.  They are nice guys but I have been in enough “shops” to know that they also talk shop.  Something I have to work on and figure out.  Thanks for the advice.  Wish we had a place like that here, you are lucky. :0)

If he is going to work in the industry, he will have to get used to being around a rougher environment. Might be better to start that process while he is still at home and you can walk alongside him.
