I’m a music teacher and I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old.
Many 3 year olds can learn to identify common musical instruments if you point them out when you hear them (piano, guitar, trumpet, violins). They can also begin to dance/stop/clap/drum along to the beat (kind of), as well as sing along with simple songs.
Thanks ladies. Tia- I am always in favor of dancing. In fact, all my girls love to do homemade ballet shows to their favorite Bach and of course Nutcracker. 🙂
HaRae, I’ll be sure to point out instruments that are playing. That’s a simple enough idea that I know I can do. 🙂 Thanks!
Something I used to do when I taught preschool music classes was help the children “see” a story in the music. Some pieces are very good for this such as The Moldau by Smetena. The Moldau is a river. I have the children imagine they are on a boat sailing down the river and imagine what they see on the boat, including a storm! They loved doing that.
I am not sure how CM using smaller bits of music is but we have enjoyed the Beethoven’s Wig and Themes to Remember series. Both put words to short selections of classical music.
We like the Classical Kids series. Also, if you have a local symphony see if the have any family shows. Ours has a family series of 4-5 concerts per year. They are about an hour to hour and a half. These are great! Here is a new resource I bought that helps you to do what RobinP suggested – http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0810957213 we did the first one, Flight of the Bumblebee, yesterday. It was fun. The main thing, though, is to listen and enjoy.
Thanks, Christie! I ordered it. A great resource for my library. We’ve been in Suzuki violin for years and I have a music degree and taught piano for a long time. Wish I had this book then. I just did my own thing.
Thanks ladies! I do have the classical kIds series, my kids have practically memorized it! I will look into the other resources that you all mentioned. Thanks so much for sharing!
When my 3yo is stir crazy and not letting us get any school done, this is one of the things that keeps her busy for a few minutes (at the computer right beside me, so she’s not clicking on anything she shouldn’t of course).
