  • I would love to hear suggestions for Christmas gifts for my kids (ds 5 and dd3).  We just started homeschooling ds for kinder and CM is working well for us.  Both my children were born in January (apparently I work like closck-work) so not only do we have to give grandparents/aunts/uncles a list of ideas for Christmas but also for their birthdays the following month.  I am all for fun toys, but also want to get things that will benefit educating at home.  So if you have a minute let me know your suggestions.  Both kids LOVE being outside and nature. TIA.

We love the Pocket Microscope from Home Science Tools – all ages can use it and it can be held like a ‘telescope’ once the slide is loaded for little ones.  You can also take off the slide holder base and check out tree bark, the carpet, your arm, or anything else that will hold still (the kids like looking at the cat when she’s sleeping).  It’s inexpensive (under $15.00) and they sell extra bulbs, so grab a few at the same time you order, just in case.  http://www.hometrainingtools.com/pocket-microscope-100x/p/MI-PK100X/

Building materials are a hit here too, be it basic Legos or Duplos, Lincoln logs, citiblocs, or magnetics.

Melissa and Doug wooden toys: clock, puzzles, wooden slicing food, magnetic wooden dolls, etc.

Our dc are the same ages of yours, and I’m hoping to stock up on dress up outfits after halloween (if there are good sales) for them to have a “wardrobe” of different outfits for pretend play/drama.  Also, handpuppets and puppet theatre is another idea.

P.S. my dc have birthdays in April and May and we used some of the birthday money for annual membership to the zoo and local botannical garden.  These are gifts that keep on giving.   Maybe some of your family members would like to pull money together to buy a family membership to some places like that (or a science museum perhaps) if you have educational places like that near you.

@Tristan – that pocket microscope sounds terrific.  How well does it work, and is it durable enough to last awhile?  I’ve always thought that microscopes were out of reach for us and we’d have to save up a long time to get one…..which we’ll probably need in a year or two!

It works well and we’ve had ours for at least 3 years.  We’ve replaced the light bulb twice in that time and it’s had heavy use by my group of kiddos (5 of them can use it right now, age 2 -10).

I second the zoo, children’s museum, or even music lesson membership ideas.

Also, these might work for you:

How about silk scarves that your kiddos can die themselves using cool-aide and can be used for everything from dress-up to doll wraps to “blanket” house walls, etc.

    Classical Music CD’s

    Good quality art supplies

    Any of the Imaginetix scene-scapes

Plasma cars – SO much fun -all my kiddos and even the adults in our home enjoy a fun race on these

Great ideas!!! Thanks!  I love the pocket microscope as well as the legos and art supplies.  We also get a zoo family membership and totally use it.  We just moved to the area so we haven’t got it here or checked out the musuems so that could be an option as well.  I thought my kids were the only ones crazy about dressing up.  Each has a trunk full of costumes and dress up clothes.  Thanks!!!
