Oh my, now I’m feeling guilty:( Right before popping on here I was looking at our schedule and decided we needed to do full days in Dec., and just add our Christmas activities after school and weekends. We spent 2 weeks in FL in Sept., came back to seriously ill father in law who passed away and my father having heart surgery, and we’re taking the 2 weeks of Christmas and New Year’s off to coincide w/hubby’s work vacation. What do do…school in summer? Hmm….the years go by so quick I really want to do Christmas school!!!

I know what you mean! That is why we are doing year round school. I wanted to have time off in December to enjoy the season and do some Advent activities with the kids. Last year we tried to fit things in the evenings, but it didn’t happen every night, and that is okay too, but I felt like I was missing out on enjoying fun Christmas things with them that I could enjoy if we took a break from our regular routine.
With that said, you could definitely do things in the afternoons and on weekends if you have the time. You just need to find the right balance for your family.

We also take our schedule down to minimum at least the 2 weeks before Christmas. We, too, celebrate Advent. This will be our 3rd year celebrating Christmas this way and we feel so good about it. We feel so close to the Lord and recieve the best blessing by keeping it centered on Him. We use the Jotham’s Journey Series as our nightly devotion with the lighting of the candles. My kids stay on the edge of their seats with these books. They hate cliffhangers! Then we read the scripture verse to go with each Jesse Tree ornament. However, we have often just read Christmas books randomly but I like the idea of making that more intentional. Maybe some hot chocolate and the lights down low! I’m writing down all these book titles now so I can get started putting some on hold. Thanks for starting this thread! I can’t wait to read more answers!

Yeah, need to ponder a bit! I’ve been drawn to the idea of year round school, but hubby has thought kids need a longer break like when he grew up, and we have a good group of neighbor kids that our kids like to play w/all summer. And I do enjoy the long break. However w/this busy year I’m thinking we’ll just need to adjust and do a shorter summer break. This thread has given some great ideas:)

Ditto here…great ideas on this thread! I was already planning on doing a Christmas “block”, and also love the idea of calling it Christmas school. I think we will probably do it for the two weeks before Christmas. I love the idea of a Christmas book a day for the month before Christmas….I have eight or ten here already, but obviously I need to spend some time at the library!
A tiny bit OT, but does anybody have great ideas for celebrating Advent with very young children? I have a couple of ideas already, but definitely want to flesh out our rituals a bit.

Questa, not sure how old your kids are, but we’ve used this wonderful book since dd was about 3: http://www.adventbook.com/v3/. We got it as a gift (it’s a bit pricey). But SO beautiful. Pages are very thick, w/thick doors to open each night. It’s simply gorgeous. We still use it w/my 10 and 13 yo, but it’s great for younger kids too because each page has an animal to find to keep it interesting. My kids would take turns opening the new door each night. We also dim the lights and light a candle, w/kids taking turns being the one to blow it out (big deal around here:) Then we often sing some Christmas songs. I have fond memories of my 3yo dancing around while we sang. Sometimes we have a treat while reading. Just what we do:) Blessings, Gina
