Time for my daily question ~ I’m really hoping you guys don’t get sick of me. 🙂

We are looking for a new chore system. The one we have going now and have had going in the past still seems to get faulty at times – however it may just be me needing some more habit training.lol 🙂

We’re in need of something a little more simplified than what we’ve been doing, so that everything gets done smoothly and efficiently. How have you set up the chores in your homes? Have you used a single chart on the fridge, seperate charts for each child, chore packs, scm organizer, a list in each room of what needs to be done in that room, etc??

    I’m all ears…

    Thanks,

    Heather

Heather, it sounds like you have used many things. Has one seemed to work better than others? I also can’t remember how many children doing chores do you have (so 2 or older)? What time do you plan on having them done and is it working? And yes I fall in this area to, but are you consitant in making sure they are done?

For us I have a chart on the fridge which tells them what has to been. So at the top is there name and then down the left side is the day of the week. they go down and across and see what has to be done. For me mornings are when we do the main chores (then they have there after meal chores also) so for us no one eats till chores are done. For us that was the only way I could be sure they would be done and done well cause they always want to eat. 🙂 Mind you one of the 5 is incharge of making breakfast, my chore is to be sure there chores are done, the little ones are staying focused on theres (like the 2 yr old) and the infant is happy.

Do you think your chores are to advanced for there ages? Or possibly not advanced enough? Are they understanding what they are to do and what they are expected to look like? Are you holding the standards the same for them each time they do them? These are the questions I have to ask myself when I look around and see things not getting done.

Also, for us we rotate our chore chart every 3 months. My reasons are this month 1 is the learning to do it month. Month 2 is the mastering it month and month 3 is the keep it in check month. Then they switch. Also, that gives me time to see where they are excelling and what they seem to fall in. I can then add or get rid of things they need or don’t need to do. EX. I have one who is NOT patient, so I then to try and find him more things to work on that like washing the table.. seems silly but he has to wait till everyone is done eatting to do (and he’s always done 1st).

I feel like this is getting long sorry. If you answer some of my questions or just answer them for yourself you might find the answer without our help. Also, if you are looking for something more specific I will try to help. This is one area I am strong in. (at least I think so?? 😕 )

    I’m all ears too…

I have used the chore packs from Managers of their Chores by Teri Maxwell. I liked the whole system but it is time consuming to get it all together. I learned to focus on the routine and habit training more then anything else. So we don’t use the chorepacks anymore but I may need to start them up again for some afternoon chores.

First thing in the morning after each child has, finished their Bible reading or looking at the pictures in their Bibles depending on their ability, they each have a set chore.

DS 8 wipes down the sinks in the bathroom and washes mirrors,

DD 6 unloads the dryer onto my bed and starts a new load in washer,

DS 5 empties all the trashcans from all the rooms into the big trashcan in the Kitchen,

DD 2(almost three) helps me change DS’s diaper, gets him dressed, and then helps me with breakfast.

Then after each meal one of them vacuums with a small plug in vac. that I got at Walmart for $10.

They help with lots of other things around the house but those are the only routine things that I have scheduled for everyday. I need to get on the ball and have them doing more so I hope lots of other women write in and I can piggyback on their good ideas. How do you guys do your chores now, and what chores do the kids do.

Oh I almost forgot that the kids also go out everyday to feed the calves and chickens and collect eggs and then in the summer we all have lots to do in the garden.

Wow, Misty. You really have some great ideas. I, too, have tried several methods with little success. They bore of the rewards, and then it’s not worth it to do them. They also need constant reminding. But doing chores before food is served—GENIOUS! What better motivation than hunger! I’m going to give it a whirl. Now if only I had someone setting up a chore system like that for me…Boy, I’d probably get a lot more done around here!

I don’t use any charts. I figure, then I’d have to keep up with the chart, so what have I gained? I schedule all our chores on the CM Planner and we have a certain time in our school schedule when we all do chores together. I turn on music and we all work together. This works best for us.

I used to do a bit of heavy cleaning every day, a room at a time, but found the house was never clean that way. YKWIM, never all clean at the same time. What good is that? So now, we clean the kitchen and bathrooms and take out the trash every day, and save the other big cleaning jobs for Friday. So the house is always clean for the weekend. I should add that we tidy the house every day an hour before hubby comes home. 😉

As far as laundry, everyone does their own. The girls do laundry on their day, boys on their day, I do mine & hubby’s on my day. My Yahoo calendar sends me an email at 8am saying I need to start the laundry, then at 10am saying I need to move the laundry, then at 1pm saying I need to fold the laundry. This saves me gobs of brain power. I don’t have to remember any more and I can’t stand not getting laundry done on the same day I started it.

We used MOTH to get me started and went from there and made a checklist for each child that is for a week. It rotates each week to cover monthly, quarterly, and yearly chores like MOTH suggests. It did take time but so worth it. Now when I need to change something I just update the spreadsheet. I am happy to share them through Google Docs if any one is interested. Obviously you would need to make it work for your family though.

Hey, Shanna, I’d love to see your spreadsheet.

We’ve used MOTH but just never stuck with it, chore packs would come up missing and I couldn’t keep up with what was getting done or not getting done. I think I would schedule too much and then they would get bogged down, so I’d lighten up and just start doing all the deep cleaning again myself.

The boys do their rooms daily, general pick up areas, take garbage out, feed all the animals and clean the pens, and help with meals, but I’ve been doing most of the main nitty gritty cleaning again. I’m really wanting to delegate more of this out.

With my 3 dc being boys sometimes I wonder if I should just keep them going with general cleaning and helping, home repairs and outdoors things, instead of scrubbing toilets and baking pies. 🙂 Hmmmm…..

All of your responses are very helpful. Misty, I love how your organization gift has helped so many of us here. Faith, you make me laugh. Ginger, I love how simple you have your chores layed out – that sounds doable for us. Shelly, thanks for sharing how your family does it; for us “routine” has worked the best too.

I’m still all ears if anyone els would like to share..

I’m past my time limit thismorning ~ blessings,

Misty, as I had a chance to come back to your post, I have to say that asking myself these questions thismorning has really helped – thank you for this.

Also, I love the idea of the 3 month chore rotation! I thank the Lord for you, girlfriend. 😉

    Have a great day!

I am so glad I can help. Because I am much better at this than schooling sometimes. I always say to my boys your wives (if God chooses that for you) will be so proud of all you can do and help with in the house 🙂

This is great I love all the idea’s. It is an inspiration to me also.
