When you are planning your family literature or an individual child’s literature, do you read a series through before movie on to another book or series or do you break it up?
I’m curious because we’ve tended to break it up much to our children’s dismay. We’ve read 1/2 of the Little House series and then moved on to other books and will at some point finish it. I just finished Little Britches by Ralph Moody tonight and they are eager for the next one, but I had planned to read Bambi: Life in the Woods next and come back to this series later, though I love it.
We read the whole series before moving on. Although, we have two books going at once, usually. We have been reading Little House this year and are currently on Farmer Boy. Concurrently, we are reading Pollyanna. We read Black Beauty during the first two Little House books. My children anticipate finishing up one book and moving on to the next in the series. I’m not sure they would let me stop mid-series!
Have you thought of just reading two books at once?
Well, actually, we usually have a few different books. Right now we’re reading Little Britches, Jack’s Insects, Stuart Little (w/ 2 youngest), Trial and Triumph. But in our family RA category, we usually have one at a time. Maybe, I’ll just add Bambi in and we can alternate depending upon mood. This is what I do, personally, so why not with RA. Thanks for the simple, yet good idea, Lindsey.
My children don’t like to stop mid-series either, but sometimes, I just can’t read as much as I’d like to get in in a year. One way I have helped resolve this is having them listen to the reminder of the series on audio so that I can move on to something else; thereby, essentially having another extra book going at the same time.
The unabridged versions of Little House read by Cherry Jones are delightful!
Oh, we have lots more going on aloud too! I was just specifying literature. We read what’s on the SCM Guide in the mornings and/or during lunch (right now for us, that’s Pollyanna). We read Little House before bed in the evenings. That’s what has worked for us. And it gives my voice a rest too!
