Choosing Latin

I’m hoping some of you lovely people can help me in this decision.  I have just recently decided to do Latin for this next school year.  I have an 11 yr old dd who will be 6th grade.  She is an excellent reader and writer.  I also have a 7 1/2 yr old who will be starting 2nd grade.  We are still working on reading.  I have a 4 yr old pre-ker and a newly turned 1 yr old.

My quandry is which Latin to start my 11 yr old out on and perhaps get the younger bunch in on some hymns and prayers, vocab.  I am looking at Latina Christiana 1, First Form Latin, and Latin for Children.  Do any of you have experience with these yet?  The First Form is only out in Beta Form and will be coming out soon.  You can order it, and it is supposed to be available this month.

If anyone here has any input, I would appreciate it.  I get so overwhelmed with all of the choices when it comes to homeschool curriculum:)

    Thank you ..

We’re starting latin soon for the 1st time as well.  My girls are 7th and 3rd, and we are using Latina Christiana 1…not sure what “Beta Form” even is.  I know Memoria Press was coming out with something new, but I thought it was “kind of” a replacement for Latina Christiana 2.  I must be confused, I’ll have to get my Classical Teacher back out.

It is a latin morning! Smile

I can tell you what I experienced. This past year my four year old did Song School Latin, veeery slowly and my older children started with LC1, moved to LfC and then we went back to LC1 and finished it.

I wanted to do ecclesiastical pronounciation so I started with LC1 and I loved it. We used the DVD’s because I had no latin back ground and I wanted it all laid out for me. It is a bit  dry, but I learned so much that I didn’t want to quit. Well,  I went to Latin for Children (got charmed away by glowing reviews), but the lessons were just not as thorough as LC1 and I gladly sold it and went back.

We finished LC1 and have been stagnating for the last three months, but I am pretty relaxed because I have chosen to go with First Form, which has a lot of review and smaller vocabulary. It is supposed to go nice and slow and have plenty of workbook exercises to make sure they really, really know their stuff. It looks very do-able in a busy house and I don’t think I will need DVD’s this go round.

    Blessings,

    Caroline

Oh, my 7 year old started Prima Latina last year and he is halfway through it. I am going to take it slow with him and then have him do First Form (provided I like it a lot) in 5th.

Thank you so much caroline4kids!  I needed to hear that regarding L4C.  It sounded like more fun to me, but I would prefer the ecclesiastical version myself.  Do you have the First Form yet?  If so, what is it like?

Baileymom…the Beta Form I was referring to is the new Latin choice out by Memoria Press.  They haven’t shipped out the orders yet, but you can order it.  That is what I think.  It is called First Form.  From what I have read, you can use it with 6th graders through 9 without prior Latin experience, or use it following LC1.

    thank you again.

I do not have my First Form yet, but I ordered it three months ago. Dh wanted me to just order it and wait, instead of getting the beta version.  I’ll let ya’ll know when we get it—and what I like/dislike about it. I am getting anxious because it was supposed to ship out by now.
