I have been doing a lot of reading about CM methods and plan to read more. However, I thought I’d throw this out to you, the experienced ones 🙂

I am torn about starting at Creation and moving forward in Year 1. I have found three basic approaches to history, all claiming to follow CM methods. The options are 1) start at creation, 2)start at columbus, or 3) do mix of both.

My gut says American history would be better with a Year 1 student, but I’m willing to learn from those of you who have walked through this.

I started with creation and have gone chronologically from there. The kids have gotten some american history just naturally since we live here w/ holidays etc. I will say, though, that there are a lot more books to choose from about American History for younger children. I don’t think you can go wrong either way.

I like focusing on American History in grades 1-3, really more like 2-3.  We also read the Bible together daily, so the children are learning Bible History as well.  I prefer to wait on Ancient History.  Rea Berg of Beautiful Feet Books wrote an educational article about this topic: http://www.bfbooks.com/When-Should-I-Teach-Ancient-History

Many families follow the SCM History sequence, and the first grader jumps in wherever the rest of the family is, which works well, too.  It is really just a personal choice.  I believe Charlotte Mason actually began with British history in her schools which would have included a good bit of Ancient History as well.

I would reccomend beginning where you are most comfortable.  🙂

It really doesn’t matter, as long as you chronologically from there.

I’m with Andream–we are in Module 1 right now, with a first- and third-grader, but we still get in American history with field trips, movies, interest-led reading, etc.  The kids haven’t had trouble keeping the two separate.  I’m also planning to do some relaxed American history and geography during the summers.

I also need to get a timeline or book of centuries going, I think that will further clarify the time difference between ancient/Old Testament and American history!

Thank you all so much for your comments. Based on what some of you are saying, am I to understand that starting at Creation in Year 1 isn’t necessarily a keystone to Charlotte’s approach? (I plan to read more of her work along the way.) Also, I do plan to go in order for the second time through the history modules. As I understand, SCM’s program allows for two rotations.
