Hello, we are entering the Middle Ages-Reformation this year. Last year, for Ancients, we used Story of the World as our spine. I tolerated it, but didn’t love it. My son, 7-8 at the time, could give me a decent narration from it, but with little genuine interest. So, this year I’m considering Child’s History of the World by Hillyer, and more living books. I also want to add in some Our Island Story by Marshall. Basically, I want to take AO Y2 and 3 and pull out the pieces I like to make our school year complete. Lol. Anyhow, what do you all think of CHOW?

I’ve never used CHOW myself but have heard wonderful things about it! Have you tried a sample to see how you like it?
We do love Our Island Story.

I’ve never used CHOW, but I recently purchased it at a book sale and I think it would be a wonderful spine for kids in the early elementary years.

My oldest started SOTW four years ago and he is just wrapping up Vol. 4 this semester at age 11. We have all loved it and will continue to use it as a supplement. My younger ones are using CHOW as a spine this year because we switched to Ambleside Online and I thought we’d give it a try.
So far, so good, we just skipped to chapter 4 because the earlier chapters are weird. Not only because they talk about evolution and pre-history in a non-Christian way, but I picked up this book when I was a kid and the only thing I remember is how weird the first few chapters were. Then I handed it to my 11 year old and he was totally turned off by them too.

CHOW is fairly simple language. I’d say it’s for younger kids. I liked it but I did edit as I read some bits. It is older and the language can at times sound racist. Other times I just read what was there and we talked about how words and ideas change over time. I love Our Island Story too. Obviously it is more focused on just England. I can’t remember the spine we used for that period but I know it was from Heritage History. They have lots of ebooks. You could look at what they recommend.
