My 7 year old daughter has a big interest in Chemistry and has been asking to do chemistry for quite a while now. Any suggestions of some good activities for her that aren’t just baking soda and vinegar? 😀 And something that won’t be over her head. I have my degree in Biology and have had chemistry classes through Organic II, yet I feel a little lost on where to even start with my daughter. But I want to foster her curiosity. Suggestions would be wonderful!
Steve Spangler has a website chock full of ideas, books, and experiments. Dd8 has science fun on her schedule 1-2 times per week. We’re using Pond and Stream Companion from scm for our science studies this year, but dd loves, LOVES, loves science experiments, especially chemistry. I let her take the lead with the Spangler books. She makes lists of needed items, I buy them, she does the experiments.
The American Chemical Society has free resources on line. They have resources for elementary ages all the way through graduate school level. We also like their books for elementary ages. One book is free on line: Apples, Bubbles and Crystals.
We have a book called Science Experiments You Can Eat. While I have to admit we haven’t used it, I’ve had plans to use it for years. One of the experiments is making sugar crystals (rock candy).
And the videos on “The periodic table of videos” are fun to watch.
The book ‘Elements’ (I can’t remember the author) has great colourful pictures and information about the elements. It would be a wonderful resource for years.
