  • First, I wanted to share something about one of my favorite websites (Educents): they’re going homeschool-crazy now, and they’ve got several CM-friendly items on sale right now! (Write through History, for instance!).

Second: if you’re following the curriculum guide here at SCM, has anyone carried on the “living books/nature study” approach to Science on through Middle and even High School. We *own* Apologia’s General Science…and I have no problems with my girls doing it (and maybe they should). At the same time, it feels very school-y to me and we’ve always enjoyed natural learning when it comes to Science. (The girls to whom I’m referring are 13 y/o by the way.)

Now, I know the CM method is about ‘stretching the mind,’ and definitely the Apologia “General Science” would do that…but I don’t know. It just feels very school-y. (We’re using LLATL for L/Arts, which some might consider “school-y” but which I consider very gentle, even for my 13 y/os who are in The Green Book right now.)

Just looking for thoughts/opinions here. 🙂

We just finished Apologia Astronomy in January (kids 9 and 7).  I felt I was reading a textbook from school again.  My kids didn’t like it but we went ahead and finished it.  Many like Apologia, but for us, it didn’t work either.

@HomeofLove4Him I sent you a PM this morning.

I still can’t seem to copy/paste links for threads, or websites.  There are several threads on using living books for highschool.  If you find that’s the best fit for your family, don’t be intimidated into giving up when others think it can’t be done.  It takes time to plan it and courage to follow it through, but it can be done!

Melissa has some encouragement at her blog, http://www.reflectionsfromdrywoodcreek.blogspot.com.  Look under the highschool and science sections.

http://charlottemason.tripod.com/hisci.html has some brief suggestions and resources.

http://appliejuice.wordpress.com/brain-stuff/living-book-list-for-science/ has a list originally found on Donna Young’s website.  Not all of them would be appropriate for highschool.

    http://www.storiesofanunschoolingfmaily.com/2013/02/an-unschooling-way-of-high-school.html  shares some helpful ideas.

There are families that do not want to pursue the traditional college route.  That doesn’t mean that they always prepare for life completely differently.  Some choose traditional textbooks and follow them to the letter.  Others use Apologia, etc. in a “CM” style (the topic of a recent thread.)  Not as many choose to continue using living books and real life, hand’s on practical “labs” to accomplish the same subjects.  Knowing your options and each child will help you complete highschool science well….even if the plans include college.

The key is to cover the subject matter well and complete lab work.  Labs can be complicated, or quite simple.  There are even free labs online.

I hope others who’ve used this approach will chime in.  We’ve done a bit of both.  Master Books Curriculum is great for junior high into highschool.  Our older children learned so much from these resources.  We also added in Biology 101 and Chemistry 101, but found that more needed to be covered than the suggested syllabus to be considered a full course.  No problem.  More research and application.

Pray through your planning and you will find the books along the way.  It’s an exciting adventure!

You might consider this for a middle school survey.  Master books tend to be something between a textbook and a living book.  ;0)
