I am really interested in getting this but wanted to hear some reviews from others who use this approach and not a curriculum. Also, it says this is good for Elementary Math. What grade would that be up to? 4th or 5th grade? Thanks!

I have it and while we have not started yet, DS is too young I am excited by it and the approach without the worksheets.  I think you can go through about 8th (my take), but am sure others will step up and tell you for sure.

I did want to say that I thought it was an approach without curriculm and that scared me to death, but that is not quite the case. CM did use a math spine. It was just how she approached the presentation and used the spine as examples for the teacher to use with the students.

Richelle will be able to tell you more, but I wanted to share my excitement for this.

    Hello Amy3 and Laurie,

The dvd’s take you through what Charlotte referred to as elementary arithmetic, which is Form IIB, approximately our fourth grade, age 9-10 in the States.  Depending on your scope & sequence, it also touches on many of the things in Form IIA, approximately our fifth grade. How this falls out in your own homeschool will depend on your child’s pace.

The book goes through her living methods of teaching for Algebra and Geometry as well.  I have used Charlotte Mason’s methods for math with both my children.  My oldest son is just finishing eighth grade and my other son is finishing sixth grade.  As my oldest heads into high school, I used Charlotte’s standards to pick his textbooks, just as we use her standards to choose living books in other subjects.

Laurie, I’m so happy to hear of your excitement regarding the living teaching of math.  You are right, if a teacher was not comfortable coming up with her own oral examples in the early years, then there were suggested spines to utilize for the questions.  They were not used “as is” but adapted to fit Charlotte’s methods -such as not using the first few pages which explain everything but, rather, taking the child through a sort of guided journey where he or she would discover the rules for themselves.  Much like making connections themselves and narrating back what they know.  Once the child “discovers” the rule him or herself, they write it in their math notebook, which was used sparingly.

I hope this helps.  Maybe others will chime in with reviews but I think that with consistency, step-by-step, a child goes forward and always on firm ground.

    Warmly,

    Richele
