  • How would you design a Charlotte Mason schoolroom? What would you put in it?

We are adding on a schoolroom and new room for our girls. The schoolroom is about 10×20. I think beauty and children can co-exist, I don’t want it to look like a daycare. I really like vintage, victorian, and shabby chic decor. I understand the purpose of the room is for children, but I can’t take a room full of bright colored plastic. I hope I don’t sound like I’m complaining,I would just like a relaxing, useful space that’s pretty, too!! That’s all, just my cake and eat it with tea, too. LOL!

I found a PR article about a schoolroom, but does Charlotte give suggestions anywhere in her series? If so, I can read it online.

    I found this Parents’Review article:

[Moderator’s note: Ambleside Online says you must agree to their license agreement to use their materials. That agreement says that linking to pages other than their home page is not allowed. They also state that linking even to the home page is only allowed with permission. We have removed the link to comply with their wishes.]

Does anyone have ideas or pictures they could share?

    Thank you very much,

    Monti

I think your idea sounds great! I’d paint the walls a relaxing color that I liked, then hang art prints from the curtain rod on the big window that I assume is in a room that size. I’d put a pretty, up-to-date globe somewhere accessible and attractive world and US maps on the walls. I’d also have a bulletin board wrapped in a cool vintage fabric, like Dick n Jane or something that I liked, and keep our rotating memory verses and poem there.

Thanks for the link to that article – I can’t think of much to improve on the schoolroom it describes, except a way to play music cds. Actually most of the things in the article can be found in our home, and I have enjoyed how CM style learning has enabled us to do away with the school/nonschool distinction at home. But that schoolroom certainly seems like a fun place to be. I wish we had the space for our kids to have a playroom like that.

Our schoolroom looks a lot like a kitchen. 🙂

Well, after all, Charlotte DID say that offering an education was rather like putting on a banquet. 😉

I think your room sounds fantastic. On my “wish list” is a whiteboard/magnetic wall. I think I’d vary the PR article and opt for a cushy couch or bunch of cushions in a corner on the floor. One of the very few “real classroom” accoutrements I’ve always wanted is one of those cool roll-down maps. A really big one. For some reason I loved those in school. I have maps all over the place but I still want one of those roll-down ones.

Michelle D, whose schoolroom strongly resembles a kitchen as well.

Our schoolroom looks like a dining room, kitchen, couch. bedroom, and a car. I win!

Monti, in the midst of Doug making me laugh ~ I LOVE your ideas of a Charlotte Mason schoolroom! What a joy that will be for you!

I would like to see beautiful book shelves or large pretty book baskets sitting around. I love Michelles idea of a large roll-down map. Wouldn’t it be great to have one of those for large art prints too, that you can switch out??

Blessings and Welcome Monti ~ so happy to have you here!

For the article, go to the homepage, click on Parent Review articles. Then at the top of the page, search: schoolroom. Too great of an article not to share.

I agree with beautiful bookshelves too. I’d love to have a quiet and comfortable reading area but right now that’s my couch and there are usually a few small boys jumping off of it. I love to have lots of construction type things handy (like Lincoln Logs and K’nex and such), but keep them in a closed cupboard so you can’t see them when in the room, but the kids can easily access them. We also have an art closet stocked with all sorts of markers, crayons, papers and other craft supplies like glue, felt, pipe cleaners and whatnot so they can create whenever they want. So many times after studying an artist they all run upstairs and try their hand at a new technique. If your girls are artists it might be nice to have an area to display their artwork, a small easel or cork board, etc. You can switch it out every now and then.

Have fun. It sounds like you already have some great ideas.

I love the roll down map/art print idea! I agree with the reading nook and book shelves. Our school room is only 10×10, so I don’t have room for that. But I would love cushy pillows and bean bag chairs, a soft rug, a basket to hold our handicrafts, and baskets for puzzles, construction items, and our current read-alouds.

AHHHH! While I’m at it, I want warm weather and a bird chirping outside in the tree, kids who never whine or complain, and a husband who does the dishes. I love dreaming!!!

Faith ~ have we met in La-La land before? lol -Sometimes I dream so much that my husband wonders if theres enough room left in my brain for reality. 🙂

Laughing with you, Faith! Have a great day!

Right now we’re using the kitchen table and the book to people ratio is a little scary in the living room! It will be nice to leave projects out and not have to pack everything up for meals. There’s a nasty rumor going around that kitchen tables are used for eating on, I was quite shocked to hear this. 🙂

Bookshelves are a definite must. I would love a roll down map, they are pretty cool. I have seen some wall maps that have an antique look to them, but are current. Our bulletin board could use a make over, I really like the Dick & Jane idea. We do have a large window, I would like to use that area to start seedlings.

It will also be our playroom so a small loveseat would make it very cozy. I think a nature area would help me be more consistant with nature study. Some posters of native birds & plants/wildflowers and a table or shelf for our nature finds.

So many great suggestions, thank you.

This is to funny ladies! My room also looks like a dining, kitchen, living rm and car! But to make anyone at all feel better while you are all dreaming 😉

We use to have a seperate room and all I have to say is “MORE TO CLEAN”. There it is for me it ended up to be another room on the chore chart, so if you ask the boys they are very happy at the kitchen table! LOL

Though there are many times I still wish I had that room 🙁

Great idea’s though even for our home.
