I’m looking for a character study type book with activities to do with my boys. I read a thread awhile back but can not remember what/where the book was from, anyone remember??
We will continue with the Millers books and I have Making Brothers and Sisters Best Friends, which I thought we should use. I think there are activities in it, but not sure and my boys could use this type of encouragement. I was thinking that I would like something that helps them work together, i.e., make cards for shut-ins (or missionaries), bake cookies for others, do something nice for each other, their dad, neighbors, etc. I have an idea of what I like to do, but feel the need to have a plan or ideas to draw from so I don’t forget. I don’t need to be overwhelmed with feeling like I need to add an extra subject to our list but I would like something to follow to give structure. Is that clear as mud??
Not overly familiar with boy references, but knowing the scout motto, could the Cub/Boy Scout books help you with hand-on ideas for character training? My 3 brothers were Eagles and I thought the program very solid.
I know they emphasize character traits we all want such as service, kindness, etc…the Scout motto lists like 12 of them. =)
Sounds like either books from Keepers of the Faith or Doorposts…I have the girl books from those sites and they are very much like what you are describing…=)
Seems like someone recently mentioned a book called Lessons in Responsiblity for Boys?? Is that right someone? 🙂 I think I saw a link to it either on Chrisitianbook.com or amazon.com.
Sorry for being so vague, rushing through my computer time today. 🙂
Yes, I think it is Doorposts! I’ll check that out asap. @Erin, do you like the one for girls, is it overwhelming or are you able to pick and choose but still stay focused??
I will also check out the Lessons in Responsibility for Boys, thanks so much.
My3boys – I LOVE the one for girls! There is a TON in it, but that serves to make it a very economical choice for character study. My oldest dd is 6 – and there is enough in this book to last through high school. It truly is multi-age. I had a difficult time deciding where to start, so I just decided to start at the beginning trait and we’ll go from there!
I am kind of obsessed with researching curriculum but now that I found Doorposts, I don’t even look anything for character up anymore. It’s that good and that complete!
I also love the Keepers of the Faith books as well (Boys would be Contenders)…KOF is more lifeskills, but it also does deal with godly living. Between Doorposts and KOF I feel set through the end of high school for character study and lifeskills!
