Ds6.5 and I will be finishing The Children’s Book of Virtues next week and I’m not ready to start the BOV for Young People. I’ve decided to do combine ideas from Homeschool Helper and Homeschool Share with the Help Me be Good series by Joy Wilt Berry, some Jane Belk Moncure books, and other picture books. Since I’ve read on several posts that Attention and Obedience are the most important traits, I’ll start with those. Here’s what I’ve come up with for Attention.
Week 1: Dictionary definition; Read and discuss 1 Samuel 3 and do the activities from Homeschool Helper
Week 2: Joy Berry-Let’s Talk about Being Forgetful
Week 3: Play the character development game from Homeschool Share. Focus on the attentiveness components.
How does this look? Do I need to add more? Any picture book suggestions?
Thanks,
Karen

I have the Beautiful Feet booklist but some of the books are hard to find.
when we talk about obedience at house we play a game similar to Simon says. I have even used this idea when we are cleaning together to make it fun. I might say, Mommy says carry all the books up to the school room, after they have mastered one thing at a time I begin giving 2 and 3 step directions….this helps with attention. Although we play as a game they do understand it is what would be expected even if we were NOT playing. I think the cooperation just seems more fun on their end if we call it a ‘game.
With my older son (11 now but we did start this at about 7 or 8) If I cannot find a book that I really LOVED to teach a specific character trait. Then we would discuss and look up scripture. I then ask him to write a short story that shows this quality. Now that my next 2 children are 3 and 4.5 I read the stories to them that he writes and he is very proud of that which encourages him to reallly think when writing.
