    Hi everyone,

My DS is nearly 4 years old. I mainly read regular picture books to him. He can stay interested in books by Robert McCloskey and also books like The Little House and Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel. Yesterday he asked me what I was reading and while telling him, I explained chapter books. He asked if I could start reading chapter books to him. Have any of you done that with a preschooler? I was thinking Mark Twain initially but there may be better choices. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Oh yes, read chapter books to him! Some mine have loved:

Charlotte’s Web and others by EB White

The Millers series, (Wisdom with the Millers, etc)

    The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

The Beatrix Potter series – while not true chapter books they are much wordier than today’s picture books and if you read a series of them it’s like a chapter book. 😉

Winnie The Pooh stories by A.A. Milne (the original – not the re-done or newer ones done by others like Disney)

some of the Burgess Books are good for this age (Bird Bookj and Animal Book is for older kids though)

Cool! Hmmm… I’m shocked he can sit through what he can! He doesn’t seem to like Winnie The Pooh…yet… 🙂 So would you read any Tom Sawyer or the like? I love those stories. Haha. 🙂

Only one of mine likes Winnie the Pooh:

Books my kiddos have all enjoyed at 3 or older:

Henry and Mudge series by Cynthia Rylant (maybe considered twaddle, but better twaddle than others I’ve read)    Treasury for Children by James Herriot (not a chapter book, but several stories)                                                                     Five Peppers and How They Grew  (I think ours was an abridged version)

Probably more but those are some I can think of now:)

I personally would not read Tom Sawyer at this age.  Some of the themes are more mature and require discernment that a 4yo wouldn’t have.  The above suggestions are great.  My sons also enjoyed Freddy the Pig books by Walter Brooks.  Burgess is great.

We loved “Wiadom and the Miller’s” stories too. He might like “Christian Liberty Nature Reader” my daughter is now 5 but last year she was loving some of the books I read to my older boys. She loved to hear about The Wright brothers and their sister. It was just like her brothers and her. Sometimes you can find a book that has the same family values or sibling situations and that helps them become part of the story. 🙂

Great, thanks! I found The Wonderful Wizard of Oz free online and started that tonight but as I was reading it I remembered that the movie has scary parts. Do you all think that book is too frightening just yet?

Dana, my 4yo absolutely loves “Buster Bears Twins” chapter book by Burgess. You can read it free on google books.

Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy (free online)

    Paddington Bear books

We also have a few collections of fairy tales and nursery rhymes that feel more like chapter books because they are larger and have limited pictures.

I can not tell you how helpful this has been! We’re reading Raggedy Andy, Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Burgess Bird Book, etc. and he’s loving it! Thank you all so much!!
