I’ve been wanting a chalkboard for a long time and I was thinking of trying my hand at making my own. Has anyone ever used chalkboard paint? Can you recommend any specific products, tips, or fun projects? I’m not necessarily just looking for the traditional school chalkboard but other fun ideas would be great.

We used chalkboard paint to make a custom chalkboard for our dining room and it looks great, but does not erase with a chalkboard eraser. We have to use a damp cloth to erase the writing.
We did this about 7years ago, maybe the product is better now. We just used the chalkboard paint at Home Depot.

Funny, we just re-did dd’s room and I was trying to find a cheap way to cover a big wall and researched ideas. Don’t know if any of these are what you’re looking for: http://pinterest.com/baltimorestyle/chalkboard-paint/. I really like the art display:) Gina
P.S. Have never used it…so can’t help there. My initial idea was simply to paint a rectangle and have dh put a wood frame around it…not sure if/what we’ll do:)

I recently made a big one for our dining room to fit the space I had. Just used 4’x4′ thin plywood. What I learned…I didn’t sand the plywood first – it was quite smooth. Nor did I sand between coats – I was in too big a hurry. I used a paint brush intead of roller. The instructions on my can said for best results use roller and sand between coats. I’ll be taking it down to sand and coat again this fall. Should have done it to start with!! It works, but I have to wash it off instead of erasing and in this case, I really think it’s just b’c the finish isn’t smooth enough. So, that’s my .02!!

I used black contact paper that I bought from Amazon, and stuck it on our fridge. It works perfectly, even on my textured fridge surface. I used chalkboard paint from Home Depot and painted an entire wall with two coats. It is a place for our Scripture Memory, science sketches, and free hand map drawings among other things. It certainly adds character to our living room. I was worried that it would darken the room, but it has only added to the coziness.

We used tintable chalkboard paint in our playroom. Home Depot didn’t carry it when we were doing it, but several of the smaller paint stores did. Home Depot just had standard colours. With the tintable, there a limits to which colours you can make, but you can pick a colour that goes with the decor in your room. It erases fine as long as we don’t wait too long after writing on it. Otherwise a damp cloth does the trick.
You can also get magnetic primer to go under the paint so that you can use it as a magnet board as well. We didn’t do this because the primer is fairly expensive and we were doing an entire wall, but I will use it if I ever paint a smaller board.

If you take an old picture frame and paint the glass with chalkboard paint you can make one that hangs. You can paint the old frame to make it look really cool!
My friend taped part of her wall in a square box. Then she used the black board chalk to cover it. She also had a smooth surface and she wasn’t happy with the coverage. She had to keep spraying it time after time. She later made another one and she was happy with it but I am not sure what she did to fix it. Maybe it was ruffing it up a bit! 🙂

We used chalkboard paint on a small wall in our kitchen that wasn’t being used (it’s the outer wall of the hall closet). It’s great, the top half is mine for my to do lists:) We do our school in the kitchen so it’s been wonderful. It also erases with a chalkboard eraser, although some colors of chalk are worse and then we use a wet rag.

I love this idea! My cupboards are black, so I think that painting one wall would be really cool. The contact paper idea is awesome, too. And how useful! Dh brought me two huge white boards when they were tearing down the old office building and ditching everything, but I have yet to really do anything with them.
