I haven’t heard anything about her poetry on here and I wanted to see what everyone thought? I find her poems so charming, with great little bits of nature facts thrown in! My daughter loves them (obviously might be better suited for girls), and Michael Miller even has fabric with the fairies, so I made my daughter a quilt with characters from her favourite poetry (sure beats Barbie and Disney stuff in my books!).
I just looked her up – thanks for mentioning her!! I have a boy, but he may enjoy them (he’s 4 now). I would also consider them for copywork, when we get to that stage.
Okay, phobo, so I was completely ignorant of Ms. Barker and her ‘flower fairies’ until your post prompted a google search last night ;0). Since you bumped I figured you really wanted some opinions, so here is my fairly un-educated one:
I think the artwork she did is charming, but since we don’t ‘do’ fairies I wasn’t sure how to feel about the poems and paintings. They seemed pretty, but not sure if they fall into the ‘old twaddle’ category as far as their literary value?
You are right, they are better than Barbies (!), and if your family is enjoying them, I say ‘more power to you’! Just not sure if I would class them with the more well-known poets or artists that we study in ‘school’ time. Ms. Barker’s originality and imagination is certainly remarkable!!
If it spurs you or your kids to higher efforts in art or poetry, then it is time well-spent. Probably it is better than my personal hobby of reading Grace Livingston Hill books ;0). Blessings!
Hmmm…I hadn’t heard of her. I looked her up & will have to look for her works for my girls. At this point, I have bigger fish to fry than figuring out whether I’m giving my children twaddle to read so I might not be a good judge of where her works fall lol. If it interests them, has any reasonable amount of literary merit or at least isn’t introducing things with which I disagree morally then it’s good to go in my book at this point. So saying that, I like the artwork & am fine with the make believe of flower fairies & think that my little girls would find her works appealing.
