  • Since I am new to this, I was wondering if you mind giving me an example of how your day starts and ends using CM?

I will be using her method with my 2nd, 6th and 7th grader.. I would love to see how you handle your day, time wise and books you use..

Thank you so much for any help..Smile

    Hi.

I’ve posted our daily schedule (mine & kids) as well as our “scope & sequence” (this shows our books by term) found at the tabs.  Our children are different ages but it may be of some help.

    Best,

My schedule is on excel.. it’s a bit detailed and I’d love to share but don’t know how here.  If you’d like to see it I could email it to you.  I will have a 6th, 5th, 3rd, 1/2gr & pre next year with 2 little ones in tow!

I break our day into sections.. family times, independent times, family time and who we are all with.. like mom w/ older boys, mom w/ younger ones, one older w/ one younger.  It seems to run good and then no one is waiting on things like piano and computer w/ nothing else to do.  If you’d like a copy send me an email (Moderator removed e-mail address) Misty

(Moderator’s Note: Misty, I removed your e-mail address so you won’t get a bunch of spam. Covingtonclan, you can contact Misty by clicking the “PM this user” over to the left under Misty’s little picture. Or Misty, you can PM Covingtonclan and send her your e-mail address safely that way. My girls are 7 yrs, 5 yrs and 2 1/2 yrs. My 2 odd wake up at 7:30 and have free time for 30-60 mins, then my youngest is up at 8:30. We dress make beds, make breakfast, then start our school day at 9:30. Sometimes as late as 10 or 10:30 depending on the morning. 😉

We start with history/bible (sometimes we do this at 8 a.m. before 2 yr old wakes up), scripture reading, and hymn study as a family. We are studying Genesis-Deutoronomy & Anc Egypt so the bible is our history book this year.

Next I do math with each girl (sometimes 7 yr old joins her 5 yr old sister if it’s a game she enjoys. All of us do calendar together). After math, 7 yr old does copywork while I work with 5 yr old learning to read. Next, we get back together for Spanish lesson.

We read science togther as a family. On Wed nights we read poetry together. Tues nights we have Little Keepers at Home and do character study then as a family.

During meals we listen to classical music, but read about a composer on Mondays (not every composer however).

We read our literature book for 5 yr old and 2 yr old before their rest time, and for 7 yr old before bedtime as a family. (Younger 2 look at picture books)

Map drill is done on Wed now because we have homeschool co-op classes on Fridays that take up all our morning. I slip it in at the end of the school day for 7 yr old.

Nature study is done as a family on Tuesdays after our school work is doneand we do a sketch in our journals every other week or sometimes we don’t for mos. But my goal is to do 6 bird sketches, for example. We go to different parks that are wooded to observe or our own backyard. And picnic. 😉 In winter, just watch birds and squirrels from our window at the feeders.

I don’t have set times we do different subjects. I orginally wrote down times, but life happens so I do them differing order depending on what needs to be done most somedays or depending on how our morning is going. BUt we get everything planned done by 11:30/12. 🙂 And that is what counts. 😉 I keep a daily planner and check off as we accomplish or I’ll forget!

I wish I had a document to share, but I’m old fashioned and hand write in a schedule (I use the Planning your CM Education schedules, from the book sold here–I highly recommend!)  Something of a run down:

Kids wake at 8:30, dress, beds, dog care and do 30-45 min. of independent work. Their independent work inludes:

    10yo Daily: Devotion/Math-U-See (2 pgs)/Spelling Workout/Writing Tales/Ambleside or SCM history or lit. reading/30 min. free reading/Queen Homeschool Copywork/Piano

10yo M/W:  Mango Spanish and Dance Mat Typing (only about 10min. ea)     10yo T/F: Greek

    7yo Daily: Devotion/Math-U-See (2 pgs)/Spelling Workout/Queen Homeschool Copywork/Handwriting Without Tears Cursvie Page/15 min. free reading/Piano

We eat breakfast around 9:30, then do family work:

    Daily:  Bible

M: Apologia Science/Poetry Memorization of poet we are studying and read one other poem/Engish Roots Up/Supposed to do Nature Study, but this is kind of hit and miss and included in our science book this year—hope to be more disciplined with The Handbook of Nature Study next year.

T: Scripture Memory (plan to start SCM system next year)/SCM history reading/English Roots Up/Lit. from Ambleside or SCM (usually Lamb’s Shakespeare or Trial and Triumph)

    W: Scripture Memory/Science/Read a Poem from A Child’s Book of Poems/Lit.

R: Scripture Memory/History/Geography (use free map outlines)

F:  Dad does Greek and Art and kids do a little independent work, easier day

After family reading, I do one-on-one work with 7yo (reading lit. from Ambleside and have him read to me, give math help if needed).  During this time 10yo goes back to independent work.

    Lunch

7yo finishes any independent work, but he is usually done by now.

10yo finishes independent work and I work with her on anything needed (math, writing, a dictation once a week, spelling list once a week).

If they are diligent, 7yo is done by 12 or 12:30 and 10yo is done between 1:20 and 2 (includes meals). They usally still need to do piano after this, and we try to get outdoors for some exercise after this, too. We are late risers or would be done earlier:)   Hope that helps some and wasn’t too confusing!  The CM Planner book is nice, because it neatly lays out different schedule ideas with examples of how other families do it.  Blessings:) Gina

Well, I use a modified Workboxes system – in a tote box.   Right now I am working with a 6yo and a 4yo.  The 4yo is doing some basic reading instruction, and some math.

I (using the organizer) grab everything that will be needed for the day – then put it in the workboxes in the order I want them to do it. (mixing types of activities).    I actually use a portable file box for each of them, with filefolders for the “box” – or I put the book in the spot.  If something happens and we need to go somewhere, or if we choose to do school outside – everything is in the box.

We do a devotion first, including scripture reading and scripture memorization box…  then my oldest starts on his boxes.  After he has gotten to math, I do my 4yo’s math.  When he has done his reading instruction, I do my 4yo’s reading instruction.  Those are break times for him – where he plays with the toddler.  (The 4yo plays with the toddler sometimes while I work with him…)

I’m sure as more of my kids get into schooling age, I will need to work the schedule a bit more – but right now this is nice and gentle…

Here is a link to our weekly schedule.  My kids are 12, 8, and 4.   We do family work first, starting at about 9:00 a.m.  My oldest Allie (12), then does all of her other work independently while I work with Caleb (8).  Ashlyn (4), has not made the schedule yet, but I read with her and do some other fun activities while Caleb is working on his independent readings.  Caleb and Ashlyn are always done by noon.  Allie usually goes until 2:00.  If she needs me (say for a dictation) then we do that after lunch.

Man, I wish I knew how to create one of those neat schedule thingy’s and post it online! Laughing

Anyway, my kids are ds6 and dd4.5. Our schedule usually looks like this:

    • Wake up, eat breakfast, complete chores on the chore chart
    • Get dressed, brush teeth, fix hair
    • Begin school with a hymn and Bible (We use the Child’s Story Bible by Catherine Vos.)
    • DS does his copywork while dd and I work on Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.
    • DS works on math (Math-U-See) and I help dd with her “copywork” (Right now, it’s mostly just learning how to make her letters.)
    • Science as a family MWF (using 106 Days)/Picture Study as a family TTh
    • I send dd to play while ds and I do English for the Thoughtful Child W and F
    • Poetry as a family TTh (A Child’s Garden of Verses right now)
    • We work on our Scripture memory together as well, M-F
    • DS reads aloud to dd (from Days Go By or another book of his choice) while I start lunch
    • They have free time to play or read while I finish lunch
    • We eat lunch.
    • Pick up living room and their room
    • Nap and/or rest time for at least an hour and a half every day (unless we have errands or an appt.)
    • Snack
    • Free time to play. DS usually sits on the couch and reads a while, unless it’s nice, then they both go outside.
    • Dinner time
    • DH plays with them (outside if possible) or helps me clean up while they play.
    • Bath time is no later than 7:30
    • Sometimes we watch an episode of Little House on the Prairie in our bedroom–or–we read from whatever our literature selection is (Just finished Trumpet of the Swan, just started Mr. Popper’s Penguins this week!)
    • Brush teeth, sing songs, Lord’s Prayer
    • Bed time is usually no later than 8:30

    That’s it!

Here are my plans for the 2010-2011 year, which for us will begin in July. There is a plan for each of my 3 oldest, because I can’t fit it all on 1 sheet. LOL. I’m sure I’ll need to tweak a bit, but they’re fairly ironed out.

Keep in mind that I love a detailed plan as a goal, but I don’t think we’ve ever had a day that has gone perfectly according to my plan, which is fine. I just need the plan to keep me focused and get back on track.

The oldest wakes between 6:30 – 7:00 AM and gets an early start on some things and then she goes to bed at 8:30 PM. The 1st grader and 3 year old wake at 7:30 and go to bed at 8:00 PM.

    4th Grader – http://www.box.net/shared/jzkjmkr3z9

    1st Grader – http://www.box.net/shared/nyit4mhtz0

3 Year Old – http://www.box.net/shared/4nxri6vcos (She wants a pretty schedule like the big kids. Smile)

The Baby – 4 months old, ah, well, he is on a great schedule, but we don’t need a form to keep his day straight – Start at 8 AM and wake, eat, play, sleep, repeat – go to bed at 8 PM, 11PM Sweet Dreams Feeding.Wink

This is a great thread! I always like to sneak a peek into other homeschool rooms and see how those families get things done.

    Blessings,
