Can we talk teeth?

I need some advice, suggestions or just some plan old “why aren’t you doing this?” :0)

I have 2 children who have (I’m assuming)soft teeth. They can brush (we just use a regular toothbrush) for 2 plus minutes (doing a pretty good job I feel) and still their teeth get this black look to them.

So every couple months I sit down with this tooth scrapper and start scraping away to get it off, it takes about 30 minutes a piece. Just like a dentist would do. We don’t have dental, and the kids only see the dentist once a year if we get in on Give Kids a Smile day.

My dh is suggeesting gargling with hydrogenproxide (sp?), they are brushing 2 times daily and we are upping that to 3. We don’t drink pop (only water and milk), we eat healthy so I don’t believe it’s so much of a diet thing it’s more of a tooth thing.

anyone know of something more I could be doing? Oh and we use non-floride natural toothpaste. Thanks Misty

    Merry Christmas, Misty.

We stopped using toothpaste this summer and switched to using only baking soda spinkled on a wet toothbrush. We make sure our baking soda is wet before brushing. I used to think that it would be too abrasive, but I have found it otherwise. It does whiten the teeth and eliminate bad breath. Some say that baking soda isn’t as effective as we think and is mostly grandmother legend. Well, it has been good to us.

We added Oral B electic toothbrushes to the house. We share the bases and use a large refill package from Costco to supply heads for all nine of us. It helps the children and I realize how much we are brushing. I made a commitment to floss faithfully twice daily as well. I believe that flossing is the most important thing you can be doing.

Because we moved to a new area, I had skipped a couple cleanings and had not seen a dentist in over eighteen months. At my last dental examination I was told that I had a few large gum pocket numbers (depth of normal gum pockets are between 1-3, and I had a few 4s and 5s). So, I was a bit nervous last month when I finally went and saw a new dentist (after my 4 month commitment to floss twice daily while using baking soda to brush). When I had the hygenist asked, “Do you floss,” I had that nervous feeling. I meekly replied, “Yes,” thinking, “Oh, NO!”

“I can tell!” she smiled. “Your teeth and gums look great. And you haven’t seen a dentist in nearly two years?” The dentist did the examination, and with just 1-3 gum pocket numbers, he shook my hand and said to keep doing what I am doing because my teeth and gums are excellent. No, I didn’t tell him about the baking soda.  I am so happy, especially since I have had seven pregnancies that really make my gums bleed. My dd13 had an appointment at the same time, and she had no cavities as well.

I actually had a dentist tell me to brush with baking soda and peroxide. He said to sprinkle the soda in my hand, wet the brush with peroxide, then pick up the soda on the wet bristles of the brush…..and repeat as needed during the brushing. He told me that I could use the regular toothpaste afterward only if I wanted the minty taste and aroma. We live in a city that adds fluoride to the water, so he said not to worry about getting fluoride if I was drinking and cooking with the city water. Of course, he also said to floss.

I, too, had not been to the dentist in a long time, and the dental assistant said my teeth and gums looked good considering that I hadn’t had a professional cleaning in so long.

you can also add a florid rinse. I have soft teeth (which is really acidic saliva that makes the teeth soft). You need to get the mouth pH higher. You can also add an all natural product called xylitol mints (find them on amazon). They raise pH and work almost better than fluoride. Walmart sells xylitol gum as well

My two daughters get a grey film on their teeth too. They see their dentist every six months and they just polish it off. The dentist said it is probably something in our water. My children also drink only water and milk and I limit sweets. The dentist was not concerned. Scraping it off gently is probably fine. You could try an electric toothbrush which might get it off easier with less effort maybe.

Oh, and my youngest daughter has a lot of excess saliva and often gets it more concentrated. The dentist said its because she lets her saliva kinda sit in her mouth (she always was a terrible drooler!!). Like I said, they just scrape it off and polish them up and its fine. Sounds like you’re on the right track.

Two of my four kids get that grey film on their teeth and I got it really badly after being in Africa much of this past summer, where I only drank and brushed my teeth with bottled mineral water. Our dentist said that the greying, if it can be scraped off, is likely mineral deposits and that it’s not harmful, just unsightly. I concur with the homemade tooth pastes, too. It has polished off the grey on our teeth. 😉 Good luck.

Just be careful not to get too carried away and scrape the enamel off, because then the grey will stay put!

This is my recipe for tooth powder.  I’ve used it now for over a year and my dental assistant says my teeth are the cleanest she’s worked on.  (I don’t tell her why…she’d think I’m nuts and I’d hear all the stuff about flouride toothpaste which I won’t use.)  I just mix this up in a small container.

Fill the container about 1/2 way with baking soda.

Add some salt (I use Redmond’s Real Salt with minerals intact)

A spoonful or two of bentonite clay (I keep this on hand and thought it would make a beneficial addition)

A few drops of peppermint or spearmint essential oil (just make it more pleasurable)

Give it a shake to combine.

thanks everyone I will work on a few of these simple suggestions. Flossing will be a new thing as it’s hard to get everyone to do but we’ll try. Thanks again

We don’t use toothpaste either. I just started making my own tooth soap, and it’s a hit around here. The recipe is:

    • 4 TBSP melted coconut oil
    • 2 TBSP olive oil
    • 1 TBSP Dr. Bronner’s Baby Mild Liquid Castile Soap
    • 1 tsp water
    • liquid stevia to taste
    • a few drops essential oil of your choice (we used wintergreen, but cinnamon, peppermint, spearmint, anise, fennel would also work)

We currently keep our tooth soap in a small jar and dip our toothbrushes in it. Plan to order a glass lotion bottle with a pump top so that spilling our tooth soap isn’t as risky.

I’ve heard that using baking soda with salt on a daily basis can be damaging to enamel, but I have no personal experience to back that up.

For more info on natural tooth care and healing, check out Rami Nagiel’s book, Cure Tooth Decay.

We also make our own shampoo, laundry soap, deodorant, and body lotion, if you’re interested!

    Blessings,

    Lindsey

Lindsey, are the recipes for your shampoo, laundry soap, etc. on the Pennywise Woman blog? If so, would you please post the link? Or, if they’re on your blog….

    Thanks!

Oh, where they on the website? I would love them. I do my own laundry but shampoo and deodorant are good ones. Misty

I think some of these are on Lindsey’s blog.  I’ve made my own deodorant for a year and a half and LOVE LOVE LOVE it!  I use coconut oil, a little baking soda and a few drops of essential oil (I use lavender.)  It’s WONDERFUL!  I’ve worn it though hot southern summers and have had no issues at all.  I haven’t made shampoo yet but it’s next on my list.  A local lady makes a very good shampoo bar that I love so I’ve stuck with it.  Lotion is easy to make.  I made a batch of lotion bars and vanilla extract and gave them as gifts this Christmas.  Fun.

Lindsey, i use my homemade soap and apple cider vinegar as a conditioner.  How do you make your shampoo?  I tore the tendon off the bone of my finger and am finding using a bar of soap difficult for washing right now.  I’m interesred in lotion (though I just use shea butter and rose oil right now?  I’m interesred in deoderant too.  My dd has an issue with sweating under her arms – how does it work with that?
