My 11yo dd reads fairly well, but not at grade level and she is terrible at spelling. Her 10yo sister is profoundly dyslexic and we use the Barton system for her but is not right for my older daughter. I was thinking of purchasing SCM Spelling Wisdom, in hopes that her reading would improve as she was learning to spell (I hope that makes sense). Does anyone have any suggestions?
I don’t think that Spelling Wisdom would do what you want in this case…. it teaches spelling by just reading and studying the passage.
I’m using All About Spelling with my 9yo son (whom I’m sure is dyslexic) in hopes that it will help his spelling and reading. We have only been doing it a couple of months but I think it is helping

My almost 11 yr old, at the beggining of the year was a pretty good reader, but she skimmed a lot when reading to herself. She also was a horrible speller. I started having her read aloud every day and do Spelling Wisdom almost every day. At first we did spelling dictation from her copy work, then switched to SW. We also incorporated SW words into Spelling City (an online game based spelling program).
In September she could read one page aloud. Now she can read 6 or more! Her spelling has improved. We are still working on the skimming habit. 🙂
Spelling Wisdom uses Charlotte Mason’s method of dictation to teach spelling. That method depends on first having solid reading skills. If your child is still working on decoding words, then spelling is going to be a painful chore. It’s best to not force it and wait on teaching spelling because it will be much easier later.
