I’m looking at MUS for my two dds (grades 6 and 8).  We have used lots of different things for Math and have not liked any of them!  Is it hard for a child to transition to MUS when they haven’t used it from the beginning?  I watched the demo videos on their website and the teacher seems to use a lot of “lingo” specific to MUS that I’m sure a student must be familiar with????  Love to hear your thoughts.

Yes, you can.  I’d worry more about the concepts taught than the vocab, I’m trying to think of terms that might be specific to MUS in the books you might be needing and can’t think of much.  The books the MOST different from other math are the first ones, the Alpha and Beta.  I’d take great care with the placement tests and be sure the child understands every CONCEPT in the earlier books–for example, if one of your children places into Zeta, I’d be very very sure they completely understood addition, subtraction, multiplication and division plus operations with fractions, first.  Not just how to do problems and get answers, but really understand the underlying concepts.  This also might be a good question for the MUS forum on yahoogroups.

Agreeing with Bookworm, the yahoo group is a great place to ask questions. Also you can call and talk to customer service at MUS. When I have talked to them on the phone they have been SO helpful and encouraging. Definitely worth a few minutes to talk to them directly.

We love MUS here! I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

When my nephew came home in 8th grade (2 years ago now) I recommended MUS to my sister for his curriculum coming out of p.s.  It has worked well.  He had to back up a little because his math skills were lacking, and he will be doing Algebra for 10th grade.  But that’s ok, because he can still do Algebra 2 and Geometry before he graduates.

Agreeing with the other ladies here… a resounding YES!  My oldest daughter started it her junior or senior year (can’t quite remember right now…).  The other girls also started at the same time, so I had two high school students, a junior high student and an elementary student starting MUS.  I would do it again without any hesitation.
