Hi we are new to CM and I am trying to do the best I can in incorporating her methods. I am wondering what I should use for bible study. I have 5 kids ages 11, 9, 5, 2, and 10 mos. I would like something that I can do with the older 3. Should I just be reading from the bible, or is there a version that is easier for them to understand, but still goes into detail. What do you use? Anyone?
We found a wonderful gem for our bible readaloud. One of the great women here recommended a book dealer called Yesterdays Classics. On their site, I found Hurlbut’s Story of the Bible. You can read about it on the sample pages by going to http://www.yesterdaysclassics.com. It’s not twaddle-ish at all. Its very “meaty” yet is written in an easy to understand format for children. We love it so far! I’m sure you will get many more ideas from others here as well – I can’t wait to hear them. 🙂
Basically, Charlotte recommended reading aloud the accounts (especially Old Testament for children this age) straight from the Bible and having the children narrate. She did caution parents to skip those parts that were “inappropriate” for young children. I’m assuming she meant parts that involve sexual connotations or intense violence. That warning works well except when I come up to a passage that is crucial to the storyline, like why Joseph was thrown into prison (Potiphar’s wife) or why David sent Uriah to the frontlines (Bathsheba). At that point, I like to use Catherine Vos’ A Child’s Story Bible. It is well written, tactful yet truthful in the accounts mentioned, plus it includes many accounts that most children’s story Bibles leave out.
Hey!! We found a copy of hurlbut’s story of the bible at a yard sale for .25!!! We read it from time to time but are definately going to get into it a bit more. The stories are in chronological order and at the top of the page it has where it is located in the bible. We LOVE the stories. The kids get so involved in them. It’s not written like most bible story books that you find in the stores. I agree, it is a twaddle-free bible story book..
