How do you teach the calendar and time (reading a clock) and at what age?

    Thanks!

Calendar I have never really “taught” it’s more “caught” if you know what I mean.  As for clocks Math U See has this within there program so I have done it with that and never had a problem.  I think it’s like 2nd grade for the clocks?  I might be wrong.

We did the calendar as a pre-K/K kind of thing – learning days of the week, months of the year, and tying in counting practice as we added the date to the calendar each day. I’ve been doing clocks with my dd-just-turned-7 (who is technically in first grade, although I don’t put much stock in grade levels). There is a little bit as a supplement in MUS Alpha, but we also used the first part of the Math Mammoth clocks book for more practice with it. We’ll save the second part to come back to next year. (It’s meant to be spread over 1-3 grades).

I was struggling with this with our 7YOs, who really wanted to understand the calendar and what day and date it is. After trying several ways and methods, I created my own. I’m not sure if it is OK to share here, so I won’t.

I do have a product I sell that teaches the calendar very effectively, or it did for ours and others who have used it have said the same. I also have another product that works on clock faces, but it is part of a larger resource dealing with shapes, adding and subtracting number 0-9, number names and digits zero-one hundred, shape names, color names, etc.

If you click over to my blog, you can see links to these in my right sidebar, and I am having a sale on these at the site for 28% off TODAY.

For calendar – we have a pocket chart calendar from Learning Resources and the kids use it when they want to learn about calendars.

Clock is real life and the lesson in Math U See.

we cover both in RS…  not sure how much of either is in Level A [kindy] (as I’m just now using that level with my 4yo), but it is covered in level B [1st] and C [2nd]

Calendar stuff includes the number of days in the year, the number of days in each month etc.  Time is to the minute.
