Hello! I’m wondering if anyone has any comments about the Burgess Seashore Book for Children. My children LOVED the Burgess Animal Book (we did it 1+ year ago) and the Burgess Bird Book (over the past 6 months).
I am tempted to just go ahead and put the Seashore book on our list next since we love Burgess so much, and yet I’m a bit mindful that the “Seashore” book is not recommended as often as the two just mentioned. Any comments/insight on this?
We are planning a trip to North Carolina and the seashore this year and I plan on reading this book too. Can’t wait to start but I have to purchase it first!
Thanks for the enthusiastic response! Have just ordered it and we’ll be digging into it just in time for our seashore trip (SW coast of Florida) in May!
So, the Burgess Seashore book should be arriving any day now. My plan is to use this as our next Science read aloud for my children, ages 5, 7, 9 and 10.5 and take turns on narrations. I’m sure we’ll love it, but ideally I’d like to go even deeper with the two older children…the trip to Florida in May will be their first time ever seeing an ocean and I’m hoping to really leverage the enthusiasm by expanding our learning material.
Does anyone have suggestions for independent reading books for ages 9 and 10.5 that compliment the Burgess Seashore book and could be read alongside?
They both read at least a year or two above their current grade if that makes any difference on recommendations…
Robin, I’ve never heard of Spring Comes to the Ocean and I’m so excited to read it now! My 8yo son is a lover of all things ocean and I can’t wait to share with him. Our library doesn’t have it. I could get it from interlibrary loan but wonder about buying it myself. (I ususally borrow.) Is it great enough to keep in our own library collection? Is it worth $9-14 for good-very good condition? Thanks!!
Shannon, this book is by Jean Craighead George who is a wonderful author. We really enjoyed the book and if your son is all things ocean, it might be worth the investment. But then again, when have I been known to encourage someone not to borrow a book. 😉 You could always borrow it and see if you think it’s something you would go back to.
