I was wanting by 8 year old boy to read this in the upcoming year.  I was looking at a summary of it and saw that is a”frequent target of censors”, etc.  Does anyone know why?  I sometimes have to mark out words like in Peter Pan and James and the Giant Peach, but that’s not a big deal.  Just didn’t want him to read something that might corrupt him 😉

    Thanks

I read it when I was a kid an loved it. I am wondering if the problem is that one of the main characters (a child) has a tragic death, it is pretty heavy emotional material for a child. I think you just have to know when your child is ready for that kind of topic. Also, I don’t think the characters were Christians and so the subject of death was not really talked about in a Christian “spiritual” context. I have a nine year old and I will wait with that book and be aware that we may need to have some conversations about death and dying from a Christian viewpoint. You might want to preread it for yourself and see what you think.

CommonSenseMedia.org has a review of the book and recommends it for ages 9 and up.
