  • Hello, decided I will use the charlotte mason way and the books because it fits our semi unschooling. and I don’t like doing paper or book curriculum. but my question is I have a boy who doesn’t like to read, are any of these books pretty interesting for a 9 year old boy. I mean he does read because reading and math are my requirements.

You could choose a couple off the list and read them out loud to him, then if he enjoys them you would know and he could start reading them himselves.  My children have loved every book so far that is in their independent reading section on the curriculum guide, not necessarily some of the family history or geography books.  Maybe just choose the module you would start with and get one from the library and read it aloud, unless he would rather read to himself, but that always gets mine more interested, if I read to them first.

could you direct me to the list on this webpage, because only list i find is from the living books curriculum website thank you

At the top left (on the SCM homepage or the forum page), the Quick Links box shows “Free Curriculum Guide.” That’s what you need to click on. Then you would scroll down the chart to Literature. Clicking on that will take you to a listing of recommended books by grade.

Furthermore, if you click on any of the book titles, it takes you to the SCM Bookfinder and there is usually a brief summary of the book. Then you’ll be able to choose books that might suit his interests. I think a read-aloud to start would be a good idea. We did that our first year using CM methods, and we began with the book “Rascal” by Sterling North. It’s a boyhood memoir, and it was well-written but not too heavy to start out.

Perhaps if you gave us an idea of your son’s interests, others here could suggest books their children have enjoyed at that age.

    HTH,

well, I know he likes adventures. most of the books he has read are diary wimpy kid, and geronimo stilton books good for just his own fun reading. but I give him assigned books to read, children books on black history and randon books.

I was also thinking of the history books, fiction and non-fiction, those are the ones my kids enjoy.  So follow Sue’s advice to get to the Free Curriculum Guide, but then click on History, and then pick a module that he might enjoy.  Then look in the appropriate age section for history book ideas.  Another thing I like to do is use the bookfinder, so right below the link for the Free Curriculum Guide, click on CM Organizer/Bookfinder.  Then select his grade level, and type Lesiure Reading into the search box.  It will bring up many books for his age, and you could skim the list to see ones he might like.  Has he read any Narnia books?  There also have been posts on this forum about books boys like, but I can’t find the posts right now for some reason, maybe someone else could.

Here is a multi-page post from a few months ago about books for boys; lots of good recommendations there:

Chronicles of Narnia is a great adventure book you could read together. 🙂

My boys are 9 and 10. We are REALLY enjoying Chronicles of Narnia, as the above poster mentioned. We have finished the first book, The Magician’s Nephew and are into the 2nd book.

Good luck and just keep trying!
