  • Hi,

Can anyone recommend a really good, but not too expensive, botany book. Someone has recommended to me Botany in a Day by Thomas J Elpel, but it’s too much money and not easy to get hold of. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Lyn

We used Exploring Creation with Botany, by Apologia. We didn’t do all of the projects, just read and narrated for the most part. You can sometimes get it used on Amazon or ebay. It’s a nice hardcover book and covers a great deal of botany.

    For what ages, Lyn?

We like the Apologia botany course too. Here are a couple of other ideas for younger children.

Karen’s son just discovered these delightful nature books written by Arthur Ransome (think “Swallows and Amazons” series). They’re free downloads and might be helpful.

You might also enjoy The Mary Frances Garden Book.

Thanks. I’ve downloaded the Arthur Ransome books (we like Swallows and Amazons!). The children are aged 9 and 7. I was planning on using Exploring Creation with Botany next year (as in 2010). We are just coming to the end of Zoology 2 and I’ve got Exploring Creation through Astronomy as our next book. Maybe I’ll get the botany one now too. I wanted something to use alongside the Handbook of Nature Study through spring as so many plants come back to life!

    Thanks for that link, Sonya.

If anyone is interested, Barb has started a Wednesday’s Flower entry at her Handbook of Nature Study blog. It should keep us looking at flowers with the handbook through spring.

    Gem,

That’s why I was looking for the botany book!
