I have a 9 year old 4th grader and 6 year old K’er. I know the one in K shouldn’t be expected to have the full attention span of a 9 year old but we are all kind of bored. I am using SCM History Module 6 this year. Last year we used Beautiful Feet Early American History and it was our favorite subject. We all loved it. I wanted to continue with this time period so that is how we chose to start with Module 6. However, we are all very bored with the Stories of the Nations and Stories of America. I don’t know what to do at this point. I want my kids to continue there love of history and right now it’s just not the case. Any suggestions?
Well, we are doing the same module and loving it! BUT, Sonya says that the child MUST love the book! Isn’t that remarkable? Just the fact that she advises that the child must embrace the material and love it is so inspiring….
But I digress. I would say that if my child loved history, and was now hating it – I would change the book. You are adding plenty of other good living books for your read alouds and her independent reading, correct? If so, I would simply find another spine. Keep the SCM guide if you like and use it to plan what you read. Or chuck the whole thing and go with another spine.
Writing is subjective. What works for one family will bore another family to tears! Go with something that speaks to you and your children.
We are using Module 6 also and enjoying it. However, sometimes the readings get long and we break them into two days. Also, I added some historical fiction that really brings the time period alive. We just finished Turn Homeward, Hanalee. I think that Beautiful Feet has more historical fiction so maybe that is the difference.
We loved module 6 last year, but added in documentaries, Liberty’s Kids, other historical fiction and picture books as free reads. Also, we too the opportunity to visit some places studied.
