    1. Ralph Moody’s Little Britches series (of course)

    2. Captains Courageous (a spoiled rich boy falls off his oceanliner into the sea and is rescued by a deep sea fishing crew heading out. He must work like the rest of the crew if he’s to get along)

    3. Sir Ernest Shackleton’s South is a tale of courage and of overcoming adversity

For a great biography, about someone who worked hard against the odds being raised in the projects by a single mom to becoming a world famous pediatric neurosurgeon and now is gaining a political voice in the media : “Gifted Hands” , it’s the Ben Carson story. There is a movie as well, but read the book first.

Oh, Gifted Hands is a great recommendation.

May I add Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham? What an amazing story about a self-taught linguist, mathematician, and navigator. Nathaniel Bowditch really knew how to study. 😉
