To help them ‘rise up and be men’. I’ve got some 13 and 14-year old boys that basically want to play all day long. While I don’t want to take away their childhood, I’d like to help them see the value of hard work and a great education. This is the series that has had the most impact on my kids, boys and girls! June 9, 2014 at 12:52 am LaurieParticipantLittle Britches: Father and I Were Ranchers – Do you think this is too young for a 4th grader? Since it is set in CO and that is the year we plan CO history, it might fit for us. June 9, 2014 at 12:57 am crazy4boysParticipantWe’ve read Little Britches several times. Maybe they need to read it on their own? June 9, 2014 at 1:03 am jmac17Participant“Do Hard Things” http://therebelution.com/books/do-hard-things/#.U5UGzCgvAXI June 9, 2014 at 1:11 am kerbyParticipantI’m not familiar w/ those. I’ll have to find them!I second Do Hard Things. It was motivating for me, too. Another set of books are by Bob Schultz. There are 4. Boyhood and Beyond, Created for Work, Practical Happiness, and Everyday Battles. K June 9, 2014 at 1:36 am kerbyParticipantAre there 7 books in the Little Britches series? Is there a particular order to reading them? K June 9, 2014 at 12:25 pm RobinPParticipantHere is the order…Little BritchesMan of the FamilyThe Home RanchMary Emma and Company (our least favorite, but read it anyway. Beware the lace curtains!!). 🙂The Fields of HomeShaking the Nickel BushThe Dry DivideHorse of a Different ColorLaurie, it is wonderful for any age. Do not, do not miss it. (Read it aloud so you can edit the cowboy language.). My latest blog post features these books. June 9, 2014 at 12:27 pm SueParticipantThese are great suggestions, thanks. I had not heard of the Bob Schultz series; I’ll have to check them out.All too often, I end up sounding just like my mother when my kids demonstrate a less-than-enthusiastic work ethic. I’ve threatened to send them to live on an Amish farm for a month, LOL! June 9, 2014 at 1:34 pm MonicaParticipantDo Hard Things is an excellent book! June 10, 2014 at 7:41 pm livkenParticipantI second the Bob Schultz books! Olivia June 10, 2014 at 10:51 pm TailorMadeParticipantSo they beat me to Little Britches series and Do Hard Things.A Message to Garcia fits into this category nicely. June 11, 2014 at 12:33 am ShannonParticipantI think Ralph was 11 in the first book of the Little Britches series. I think that book is good for all ages but as the series progresses it seems to me it is really for teens. We love the series. As we’ve just read This Dear-Bought Land and I feel it is simply wonderful, I’ll recommend that. Throughout the book is the story of John Smith and the settlement of Jamestown. JS is very much admired by the writer of the book, a very bright, disciplined and hard working man. I wish everyone would read this book! June 11, 2014 at 1:14 am andreamParticipantI agree, Do Hard Things is great.Viewing 15 posts - 1 through 15 (of 18 total)1 2 →The topic ‘Books to inspire 'young adults' to work hard’ is closed to new replies.
