Can anyone recommend some books, be they fiction or non-fiction, to inspire and encourage young adults (teens) to want to learn and study and take their education seriously? To help them ‘rise up and be men’. I’ve got some 13 and 14-year old boys that basically want to play all day long. While I don’t want to take away their childhood, I’d like to help them see the value of hard work and a great education.
Little Britches: Father and I Were Ranchers – Do you think this is too young for a 4th grader? Since it is set in CO and that is the year we plan CO history, it might fit for us.
Mary Emma and Company (our least favorite, but read it anyway. Beware the lace curtains!!). 🙂
The Fields of Home
Shaking the Nickel Bush
The Dry Divide
Horse of a Different Color
Laurie, it is wonderful for any age. Do not, do not miss it. (Read it aloud so you can edit the cowboy language.). My latest blog post features these books.
These are great suggestions, thanks. I had not heard of the Bob Schultz series; I’ll have to check them out.
All too often, I end up sounding just like my mother when my kids demonstrate a less-than-enthusiastic work ethic. I’ve threatened to send them to live on an Amish farm for a month, LOL!
I think Ralph was 11 in the first book of the Little Britches series. I think that book is good for all ages but as the series progresses it seems to me it is really for teens. We love the series.
As we’ve just read This Dear-Bought Land and I feel it is simply wonderful, I’ll recommend that. Throughout the book is the story of John Smith and the settlement of Jamestown. JS is very much admired by the writer of the book, a very bright, disciplined and hard working man. I wish everyone would read this book!
