Hello, I am having a hard time keeping my daughter in books. She is 9 years old and loves to read she loves the pioneer era the best! What suggestions do you have? Thanks so much!

Hm, pioneer girl books.  I’ll assume you did Little House on the prairie series….

L.M.Montgommery did several girl series including Anne of Green Gables, and Emily of New Moon….  not sue if too hard for her…

I suppose she’s already read the Little House books then?

These are “light reads” and out of print, but you might also try the Mandie series by Lois Leppard or Sadie Rose by Hilda Stahl.

I think Caddie Woodlawn would be considered pioneer era.

If it doesn’t have to be pioneer era, then the Ramona series by Beverly Cleary.

    HTH,

    Karen

Thank you so much ladies! You all are such a wonderful group!

It doesn’t have to be pioneer era. We have read Little House, and Caddie Woodlawn(was her favorite), Courage of Sarah Noble, Sarah Plain and Tall series, Cabin Faced West,Grandmas Attic, just to name a few! She really loves reading series as well.  Smile

    Hi!

I asked my 8-year old voracious reader which books she loves the most and here is her list:

Heidi and all of the other wonderful (but out-of-print) books by Johanna Spyri

The Secret Garden – Frances Hodgsen Burnett

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm – Kate Wiggins

The Borrowers and 3 sequels – Mary Norton

All-of-a-Kind Family and sequels – Sydney Taylor

Lad: A Dog – Albert Payson Terhune

Strawberry Girl, Judy’s Journey and all of the other regional historical fiction stories by Lois Lenski

Miss Hickory – Carolyn Sherwin Bailey

Misty of Chincoteague, Brighty of the Grand Canyon and all others by Marguerite Henry (these are true stories)

The Incredible Journey – Sheila Burnford

Any of the Burgess animal stories

OK, I told her to stop there, but these are all great stories for girls (and boys, too!)

Hope this helps! I understand your plea because I have a hard time keeping her in quality books, too! 🙂

BETSY-TACY books–there are a whole series, by Maud Hart Lovelace.  I feel sorry for a little girl who does not have these books to read.

    Anna,

THANK you so much! I am printing your list now and looking up books at my library online. We usually go once a month get a ton of books and then put them in our basket that holds only library books. She can then pick from them and read what she wants, I like to have her a list of books that others have recommended then there are no let downs. You all have been such a great help! Thank you all!Smile

    Bookworm,

Thats just what I love to hear, then I know for sure they are wonderful reads. I had attended a seminar once where the lady said the same thing. She said there are certain books a child should NEVER miss out on reading. However, I don’t know all those books, so its wonderful when wonderful people like this group can tell me those books that they don’t want any child to miss out on! Thank you!

Here is my latest post for fairy books, there is a series that was recommended that your dd may like. My daughter likes series too.

Understood Betsy; Elsie Dinsmore and Mildred Keith series are great too.  I also have a hard time keeping my daughter in books.  She burns through them! But that’s a good problem to have, isn’t it?
