In my heart I think I know the answer to this question, but I’m throwing it out there to get other responses. Would the “Baby Sitters Club” book series be considered twaddle? I really go back and forth with “Are these books going to enrich my daughter’s life?” and “If she enjoys reading them independently is there harm in allowing it?”
Any thoughts on this and any suggestions of independent readers for girls on second/third grade level would be greatly appreciated.
I won’t answer your question regarding the Baby Sitters Club since you already have :). Seriously, I’ve not personally read the books, but if it is twaddle, that will not be helpful to your daughter. I will tell my children sometimes that certain books are just not worthy of their brain power.
Have you perused Vision Forum’s website? They have lots of picture books for girls that are more than just pictures. Also, Lamplighter is starting to come out with some of their stories that are rewritten and illustrated. Keepers of the Faith has some good wholesome books for young ladies, as well. Youth with a Mission has good biographies. And, of course, the bookfinder here should help you find some good reading.
I will second the recommendation for Lamplighter Books! They are exceptional and worth the price. We have 5 or 6 titles and look forward to collecting more!
Thanks for the suggestions! We have purchased Lamplighter books for our oldest (she’s 17) and we got Teddy’s Button for me to read aloud to our youngest two, but it has been awhile since I’ve looked there. I don’t think I was aware that they had reader type books for the younger children.
I’ll have to check out Vision forum as well. It’s a shame that these types of books are not easily found at the library! Wonder if one could start a ‘CM friendly’ library?!
Thanks again!
