After getting tired of the first set of Bob books, we went into an old Dick and Jane book, and then the first of the Pathway Readers (recommended for the beginning readers on the SCM curriculum guide), and now are reading through the Primer level the Treadwell Reading Literature readers (free online here http://www.mainlesson.com/displayauthor.php?author=treadwell or inexpensively for Kindle here http://www.yesterdaysclassics.com/catalog/catalogkindlebytitle.php – scroll down to 135) The Sonlight catalog readers selections also has some good ideas for regular books that you may find at the library – my dd who is gaining fluency as a reader enjoys Dr Suess type books and the Little Bear series.
Just wanted to echo Jen. Highly recommend the Pathway Readers, starting with First Steps, Days Go By, and on. Sonight also has wonderful reader suggestions per grade level. For first readers, my boys also enjoyed the Billy & Blaze series.
We used the Dick and Jane readers… there are 2 “treasurey” books of the primer levels available. There is also a version of “Fun with Dick and Jane” that was reprinted with 6 stories (the original has around 25 or so)… and I found an original (1940’s version) of “Our New Friends” (the 2nd half of 1st grade reader), which my kids also read.
Now my kids are reading “Christian Nature Readers” for their reading practice.
