My kids all liked The Children’s Book of Virtues by William Bennett.  There are also several nice children’s books by James Herriot which are short stories taken from his longer books.  If you’re not familiar with him, he writes about being a country vet in England, so his stories are always about animals.

A book of silly children’s poetry that we LOVE is Pink Lemonade.  It was originally written in Dutch by Annie M.G. Schmidt and translated by Henrietta TenHarmsel (who was my aunt’s sister — that’s the only reason I know about the book).  I don’t know how widely available it is, but I have found it at Amazon in the past.  A timeless classic, in my opinion.  Even my adult kids still love this book.

“The James Herriot Treasury” would be lovely! Also, I have to second the Shirley Hughes. We purchased “The Big Alfie and Annie Rose Book” and “Dogger”; My 3yo loves them! He also absolutely LOVES classic illustrator “Eloise Wilkin Stories: Golden Book Treasury” and “May Way for McCloskey: A Robert McCloskey treasury”.

We love the Eloise Wilkin books (The Little Golden Books).  They are so sweet for little girls.  Also, Little Mommy by Sharon Kane.  We also love books by Tasha Tudor.  1 is One, A is for Annabelle: A Doll’s Alphabet, and First Prayers are a few that would be great for little girls.  Some more books are Lois Lenski books (The Little Family, Mr. & Mrs. Noah, The Little Farm, Spring is Here…), The Library by Sarah Stewart, Miss Twiggley’s Tree by Dorothea Warren Fox (my hubby’s favorite when he was a child), The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton, The Best-Loved Doll by Rebecca Caudill (my favorite as a child), Roxaboxen by Alice McLerran, and Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney.

Hope this helps a little!  🙂
