Any suggestions on books for boys around the 10-12 year old range? I remember someone mentioning a book or series on this site but I can’t remember what it was. So, let me hear your suggestions!
My 8-year-old just finished reading through the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogy for the second time. He loves those! He also liked Robin Hood by Howard Pyle. Dover publishes a nice version with the original illustrations. For bedtime read-alouds, we’ve been going through the Redwall series for about 9 months now, with no end in sight. There are over 20 books in the series and he says he wants to read them all (we’re in book 5). Oh! He also has liked The Phantom Tolbooth and Mrs. Frisky and the Rats of Nimh.
I have girls, so I don’t know what boys like. But, if you go to What Do We Do All Day’s blog. She’s got a million book lists, in all categories. Fab site!
I have girls, too, but one I always recommend to boys and girls is Rascal. I think it’s especially good for boys, because it is the true story of a boy who finds and nurtures a wild raccoon in the WWI era, with lots of independence, resourcefulness, handicraft, relationship, and nature study built in. It’s just wonderful on so many levels. I have read it aloud countless times and it never gets old.
I will probably think of more, but Rascal is always on the top of my list.
