My son is 7 on a 3rd grade reading level. I am having the hardest time finding books that are not too hard but are beginning chapter books. He is presently reading Pathway 3rd grade readers. He loves Nate the Great, but it’s too easy now, and he has read all the ones from the library. A friend rec’d Imagination Station books. I figure it is semi-twaddle (like Magic Treehouse). I will look into them, and that might be an idea for some free reading, but I am looking for other ideas too. We have a couple of Boxcar Children books. I know he can’t read any harder than those.
We have used some Sonlight titles. Many of them are by Bulla, but there are other good books listed too. We did not try Third Grade Detectives so I have no opinion on them.
Not sure if these are considered living books or not, but my 6 year old son LOVES the Imagination Station series by Focus on the Family. They have been the perfect chapter books to get him started and he hasn’t been very interested in reading. They have a lot of historical fiction in them so that’s a plus.
Robin, those are perfect! I hadn’t thought to look up authors we have read before. Brain freeze, I guess. He read Daniel’s Duck over the summer. It wasn’t his favorite, but it looks like there are a number of options by this author to choose from.
My mom is on the hunt for Christmas, and she is asking for some titles. I had already mentioned Imagination Station as a possibility, so even though they are probably semi-twaddle, she may get a mix of these and good living books since they will be for free reading.
And, yes, Wings2Fly, he has read a couple of books from that same list as well. Thanks for the reminder! Some of the others on this list look like good possibilities as well.
