My son, age 7, has just read The Box Turtle on Long Pond aloud to me during his “reading time” the past couple of days and really liked it. We had been using leveled readers that came with our language arts curriculum, and he hated reading them. I am very glad that he has been able to find this book enjoyable and I want to find more books for him to practice reading from. The books listed on the SCM literature link looks too hard for him to read himself. He really likes animals right now and I would love to hear some recommendations for him. He still needs a little help with harder words. He read the Box Turtle book really easily. I only had to help with maybe 2 words.
Any advice? Or links to a book list that I could get at the library?
My boys liked the Cat in the Hat Learning Library books, written by either Tish Rabe or Bonnie Worth. They are illustrated in the classic Seuss style and have rhyming text, but cover a variety of science subjects. He might be able to handle some of the Christian Liberty Science Readers. Check if your library has books by Jerry Pallotta – they are funny, short, full of animals and fairly easy to read. My guys also liked the Magic School Bus books (both picture and chapter) as well as Magic Tree House (which some might consider twaddle, but I let them read it anyways!) and Boxcar Children. The Billy and Blaze books might be good too.
Thanks for recommending the Billy and Blaze books! We just got the firsst one from the library. My 7 year old son hates reading. But, he loved this book and it was the perfect reading level for him! About 3 pages from the end, he noticed that he was almost done. He said, “Wow, did I read that whole thing? Cool.” I asked him if he wanted to read another one and he said yes! Yeah! Thank you!
