I need to find some fiction books to read to a group of kids ages 6-8 that either have food in the title or are about food. It is for a co-op, and there will be additional activities related to the book and/or the food in the book.
The sessions will be 50 minutes each, so that means short books or something I can just read a chapter from and still have time for a couple of activities also.
These are terrific suggestions. A few of them were on my radar screen (Bread and Jam for Frances, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), but I really appreciate hearing about the chapters in Little House & Farmer Boy. The class is called “Feasting on Fiction,” and I am trying to make sure the stories appeal to the 8-year olds as well as the younger ones.
Has anyone read some of Jack Prelutsky’s poem collections? I have requested It’s Raining Pigs and Noodles, and Be Glad Your Nose is on Your Face from the library because I saw that their were some food-related poems in those books.
I haven’t read Prelutsky in a long time, not since my days of working in ps. One of them is titled A Pizza the Size of the Sun. The poem I’m about to suggest isn’t from that collection, though; I can’t remember the name or the collection it’s from (either New Kid on the Block or Something Big Has Been Here), but there’s a poem about a restaurant with a wacky menu. I read it to 5th and 6th graders and had them write a restaurant review. Youngers could probably divide into pairs or groups and create their own wacky menu.
Don’t forget “How To Make An Apple Pie and See The World”
LOVE this one.
Second favourite, mentioned above by Lindsey, “Pancakes, Pancakes” by Eric Carle. I usually think of Carle’s books as more junior (under age 6’ish) but in the case of “Pancakes, Pancakes”, even my 11 year loves it.
