I am finding it difficult to find the books I want. I didn’t necessarily want to buy new, I was hoping I could find used or in the library. Finding it in our local library, with the exception of 2 books is, is proving fruitless. I have searched Goodwill and our Friends of the Library used book store with no luck.

What can I used instead of 106 Days of Creation for Science? Even the living science books I can’t find in the Library.

Any help or suggestions would be great.

    Check out this blog.

The handbook is available free to read online, although it is easier to read the actual book.

Do you have an e-reader?  If so, the Thornton Burgess books are free.

This is the link to 106 days of creation (sold here on this website).  It’s pretty reasonably priced.  I’m not surprised you can’t find it in the library.  http://simplycharlottemason.com/books/106-days-creation-studies/

What other books are you looking for.  We might be able to offer some suggestions.

Are you in the US?  I have a great Science option for you, if you are NOT….

Also an option if you are having problems paying for homeschooling resources you need is Book Samaritan.  They provide books to homeschoolers that need the help.  It can take quite a while to get them, but is really helpful.  (And for other people – please donate used homeschool materials to them!)

The 106 Days is the curriculum guide, and it is very inexpensive.  I think that if you got it, you would easily be able to substitute books from your library on the different topics covered.  There are living books and conversational books found in libraries that are not on the lists here.  It is OKAY to substitute with what you have or what is available!  You will not damage your children!! =)

The Thornton Burgess books are very inexpensive on Amazon for new ones – the most I paid for any single book was three dollars.  We like them very much, and I have several children who will re-use them.

As 4myboys said, if you can give us specific concerns, we may be able to be more helpful.

I like to combine nature study with picture books from the library for a low cost science. There are many good books that I’ve found just by browsing the science shelves. Try the authors Jim Arnosky, Gail Gibbons, and the Let’s Read and Find Out series are some. We keep a science notebook and draw pictures, label them, and write a sentence or two. My kids are younger but you could just pick more in depth books for older kids. We also like Janice Van Cleave’s experiment books.

I also stalk the used book sites when I want a particular book. My persistence usually pays off.

Another option is looking for free online books. Amblesideonline.com has a lot of good recommendations and often has links to the free texts. We started reading Burgess online until I got a used copy.

If you live in the US try inter-library loan. I was able to get every book on the reading list for 106 DOCS through the inter-library loan, even Yellow&Pink, a book that is only available in 2 University libraries in our whole State.

I’ve found many books on Paperback Swap.  It’s very easy to use and only costs a couple bucks a book…though you do need to plan your ‘wish list’ in advance because some books could take months to get. There’s also a CM Yahoo group that often has living books come up that you could substitute. HTH some:) Gina

We have just started 106 Days of Creation.  I did find “Yellow and Pink” at the library, but many of the other books are not available.  I’ve started to check a few weeks ahead to find alternate books.  I usually put 3 or 4 on hold that I think might work, then I can pick once I see the books, and if one book takes too long to get, I have other options.

For other subjects, we rely heavily on the online books available through mainlesson.com or heritage-history.com or other free ebook sites.  Some ebooks I buy (usually just a couple of dollars) or some we just read online.  There are lots of used books sites, I know there have been previous posts about them if you want to look them up.
