I am looking for book suggestions for a book club for the summer – 1st through 3rd grade – boys/girls.  I want something really fun for the kids to read and discuss.

    Thx,

We are just finishing Trumpet of the Swan by E. B. White. It has been a joy to read. It has wonderful elements of character and integrity. It is also a living science book about swans. I could see a book club meeting at a lake or pond to observe water fowl as a related activity. My DS6 has a new love of birds from this book. Hope that helps!

I highly recommend Deconstructing Penguins for guidance on book clubs at that age. I am actually using it with my much older kids too (and blogging on it). It’s ned after Mr Popper’s Penguins which would be a wonderful choice.

I second the deconstructing penguins book. We just used that method to do a book club with third, second and first graders, both boys and girls with the book, a cricket in Times Square. It went really well.

If you are a member of the Read-Aloud Revival membership site ($5 to join)  there is a video workshop done by Heidi Scovel that walks you through how to do just that.  She utilizes Deconstructing Penguins and Teaching the Classics.  It’s really very well done.  Might be worth the 5 bucks to join for a month just for that.

Are you looking for books the kids would read themselves, books you would read aloud with them, or maybe both (depending on age)?  A few we have done and loved this year (I have a first- and third-grader):

    – Charlotte’s Web

    – Because of Winn-Dixie (this is one of my favorite kids’ books!)

    – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

    – Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle

Easier books for first- or early second-graders to read themselves:

    – Mercy Watson Thinks Like A Pig

    – Fly Guy series

I’m sure there are others, I just can’t think of them right now 😛 It’s been a long day…
