Our 9 year old is VERY sensitive.  He struggles with fear at night, and is sensitive to sad, harsh, and scary things in movies or books.  The thing is, he reads at like a 6th grade level, and LOVES to read.  I’m attempting to keep more heavy books for when he is more emotionally mature.

Do you all have book suggestions that are around 3-6th grade in difficulty but that are fairly void of emotional drama?  For instance I think he would love Black Beauty but I think the horses burning alive in the stable would scar him.  Swiss Family Robinson would be perfect but there is all the places where the monkeys get killed, etc.  He loved 21 Balloons.  I don’t want to over shelter him, but on the other hand I was really sensitive as well, and Bambi and the like was rough for me.

    Any suggestions? Thank you!

I was going to suggest My Side of the Mountain, but it has him killing animals for food and clothing It is not graphic, but it is included as it is a story of how he makes it through the winter in the mountains. My 4th grade son really liked it a lot! and I did too, even my 6th grader read it, after my son, and she liked it.

He also likes some of the Roald Dahl books, Danny Champion of the World is fun, and Phantom Toll Booth was fun too.

Little Lord Fauntleroy is a great example of good character traits.  Adventurous and entertaining.

Cinnabar by Marguerite Henry about a Fox family and a game of Fox hunting, from the Fox’s perspective.  He gets his foot hurt in a trap, but gets away.
