  • I want to start reading a book alone with each of my children, I only have 2 and they are almost the same age, so we read everything the 3 of us together. I think it would be nice to have some individual time with each of them to start conversations and deepen the relationship in the years to come. I don’t really know what kind of book I am looking for. I would like something that is beautiful and fun to read, yet at the same time can be practical and start conversations. Anyone has suggestions? I have a girl who is 10yo and a boy who is 9yo. Thanks

How about Thimble Summer for your daughter and Rascal for your son.

    For your daughter:
    The Secret Garden
    The Little Princess
    What Katy Did
    Pollyanna
Five Little Peppers and How They Grew
    Jack and Jill (Alcott)
    Caddie Woodlawn

I’m not sure what you mean by a “beautiful” book for boys, but here are some my son has enjoyed during read aloud time:

    Homer Price
    My Side of the Mountain
    Where the Red Fern Grows
    Summer of the Monkeys
    Gentle Ben
    Owls in the Family
    Swiss Family Robinson (just started)

My son and I have liked:

    Little Lord Fauntleroy (wonderful!)

    Just David

Blake Star of Kingston (Green Ember)

    Best Christmas Pageant Ever

Created for Work by Bob Schultz

Next: Mountain Born and A Place for Peter, both by Elizabeth Yates

Probable classics in the future: Tom Sawyer, Robin Hood, Little Men

    Little Britches series

Thanks for the suggestions, it is really helpful!  Reading your answers, I realize that what I want is to have the kinds of conversations we would have if we read Boyhood and Beyond, Ourselves or such books. But I think it would be more fun to read stories together. Or maybe I could alternate between these 2 types of books? (Or maybe I make it more complicated than it should be. 🙂 )

So here is another related question: how do you all start conversations on books, how do you make it personal? We love to read together, and my children are getting good at narration. But, starting conversations about what we read is not easy for me! Any tips?

Other great suggestions are Understood Betsy, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, All of a Kind Family.

The Read Aloud Revival podacst has great suggestions for books and questions. They suggest you ask these kinds of questions:

    1. How is X like Y?

    2. How is X different from Y?

    3. What other story does this remind you of?

    4. What do you think about what he did? Should he have done that?

    5. Who was the most _______ in the story? (scary, brave, etc.)

    6. What would you have done in his place?

These always start those great conversations we enjoy!
